Guidance

Role Summary

The Lead Prop Maker will create props and scenic items to a high standard and ensure they are a true realisation of the designer’s brief.

They will manage their time and resources to achieve high quality results and hit production deadlines.

They will ensure that the Props Workshop is operating in a safe and efficient manner and will have a hands-on role in supervising, training and recruiting junior staff.

They will ensure that inclusion and sustainability are at the heart of every project.

Specific Responsibilities
- To deputise for the Head of Scenic Workshops in regards for running the Props Workshop
- To source, create, finish and maintain props as required for the Rep’s busy production schedule
- To interpret designs to the satisfaction of the Designer providing the highest standards of prop making and finishing.
- To supervise casual, freelance and apprentice colleagues in carrying out Props Making duties
- To advise on staffing requirements for projects and to be party to recruitment decisions
- To advise on estimates of costs of making props for the realisation of an agreed design
- To ensure that prop making deadlines are adhered to informing the Head of Scenic Workshops of any potential problems
- To manage time and resources efficiently and effectively, being prepared to work some long hours and weekends to hit production deadlines
- Ensure good housekeeping of the props workshop areas, including adequate clean-up periods and the effective storage of tools, materials and props.
- To contribute proposals and enact duties towards the improvement of the props workshop department and its processes
- To be able to assist in Paintshop, Workshop and other relevant departments if requested
- To keep good records of materials and resources as required to contribute to The Rep’s Green Book shows.
- To attend the relevant production and design meetings and to advise when required
- To manage the provision and maintenance of prop making equipment and materials within the department
- Keep pace with industry developments and undertake further training and development as required
- Ensure that sustainable methods of delivering on all output are considered, developed and implemented where possible
- To support and actively participate in The Rep’s apprenticeship schemes
- Ensure excellent communication between departments and teams.

General Responsibilities
- Adhere to and implement the guidelines, procedures and policies of the company as detailed in the staff policies (available from the staff handbook).
- Complete all mandatory training and e-learning
- Ensure you and your team are fully compliant with all mandatory training and development
- Play a role in the life of the company and work across departments to develop a positive and engaged organisational culture including playing active and positive roles in staff forums/committee’s.
- Be aware of, and comply with, rules and legislation pertaining to Health & Safety at work and abide by the procedures set out in the Health & Safety Policy.
- Take ownership for the safety of the working environment for your teams by being fully complaint with the Health and Safety policies, rules and training for yourself and your team members including casual and freelancer staff
- Be aware of, and comply with, rules and legislation pertaining to data security, and GDPR, at work and abide by the procedures set out in the Data Protection Policy.
- All staff are expected to demonstrate an understanding of, and adherence to, our safeguarding policy, including a duty to report any issues of concern.

Any other duties

The duties and responsibilities set out should not be regarded as exclusive or exhaustive. The post-holder may be required to undertake other reasonably determined duties and responsibilities within the organisation which are appropriate with the level of the role without changing the general character of the post.

The post-holder may also be called upon to carry out duties that would not normally be associated with the post on a temporary basis where there is a strong organisational requirement for that to happen. The post-holder would be given appropriate training and equipment to carry out any duties of this kind.

This role leads the Props team within the Construction Department which is overseen by the Head of Scenic Workshops.
