Oxford, United Kingdom Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

A full-time, substantive, post as a Specialist in Emergency Surgery is available at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of an Emergency General Surgery team based at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The General surgical department is one of the busiest and most highly rated units in the UK and the Emergency Service is held as a Gold Standard for England.

**Tel**: Oxford 01865 234379

The postholder will be responsible for the care of Emergency General Surgery inpatients working autonomously in the department. Your duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital, but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations.

The Trust comprises four hospitals - the John Radcliffe Hospital, Churchill Hospital and Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury.

Our values, standards and behaviours define the quality of clinical care we offer and the professional relationships we make with our patients, colleagues and the wider community. We call this Delivering Compassionate Excellence and its focus is on our values of compassion, respect, learning, delivery, improvement and excellence. These values put patients at the heart of what we do and underpin the quality healthcare we would like for ourselves or a member of our family. Watch how we set out to deliver compassionate excellence via the OUH YouTube channel.

**Clinical**:
Daily duties will include assessment and management of the acutely unwell surgical patient, providing senior input to general surgical emergency and major abdominal trauma patients, both on the SEU and in the Emergency Department.

As a Senior Surgeon you will undertake and manage independent operating as well as ambulatory care and outpatient clinics. On an elective basis there is potential to be involved in the abdominal wall reconstruction service within the Trust.

**Teaching**:
The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a high-level teaching hospital within the world-class Shelford Group. The Shelford Group represents ten of England’s leading Academic Healthcare Organisations.

The post-holder will be required to actively participate in the Oxford University Medical School education programme for medical students and aid in the organisation and execution of the clinical examinations.

Active participation in weekly academic meetings, lectures and journal clubs will be actively encouraged. There is the opportunity to become a member of the teaching faculty with several Oxford University’s Colleges and to become part of the trust’s mentorship programme.

There is significant time allocated for teaching of both medical students and post graduate trainees. You will be expected to coordinate the middle grade Rota for the Emergency unit fellows and be their liaison with the consultant body.

**Clinical Governance**:
The post holder will work closely with the administrative team to coordinate the weekly morbidity and mortality meeting.

The post-holder will participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust and external accrediting bodies.

**Research and Audit**:
The unit is actively involved in local, regional, and national research programmes, where it takes the lead in many areas. There will be extensive opportunities to be involved in research and audit with the likelihood of publication. The successful applicant will be expected to be involved in the organisation of the Annual Oxford Emergency General Surgery Conference and to fully participate in the Oxford Surgical Collaborative meetings.

**Personal and Professional Development**:
The post-holder will be required to keep themselves fully up to date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or Study Leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate personal development needs. The Trust currently makes a financial contribution in support of these activities up to an agreed limit.
