**Overview**:
To work within the site and local waste management procedures and to co-ordinate same, whether RA waste management, refuse reduction, recycling or clearance; ensure compliance with legislation regarding the safe handling and disposal of waste, tackle problems, improve disposal procedures and methods and highlight the environmental and economical benefits of recycling.

**Responsibilities**:

- To ensure compliance with Environmental Permits, achieving and maintaining optimal levels of protection for the environment and the population, controlling the disposal of radioactive, controlled and hazardous wastes.
- Understand the key requirements of the Clients Environmental Permit conditions to ensure breaches are avoided.
- Maintain a working knowledge of relevant statutes and statutory instruments appropriate for the project.
- Understand the project deliverables relating to waste production and disposal and liaise with relevant stakeholders.
- Understand the Best Available Technique and Best Practical Means requirements for the project.
- Maintain a knowledge of radiological instruments particularly their use and limitations appropriate for the type radioactive waste.
- Understand waste sampling and disposal options, waste classifications and container types available for use on the project.
- Produce waste processes appropriate for the segregation, sentencing, packaging and subsequent disposal of all waste types.
- Train the project team in the waste process requirements.
- Procure and maintain a sufficient number of waste containers for the project where directed.
- Maintain and produce QA records for all waste containers or items as is appropriate.
- Review and record assay data provided by the project team to allow the correct sentencing and packaging of waste.
- Produce or assist in the production of Waste Load Plans, Waste Enquiry Notes and Waste Consignment information

**Qualifications and Skills**:
**Essential**
- NVQ Radiation Protection or City & Guilds - Radiation Safety Practices
- Proven experience of health physics surveillance
- Understands radiological issues, radioactive shielding and barrier theories and protocols for safe working
- Working knowledge of Health & Safety Regulations including COSHH, PUWER, LOLER and RIDDOR
- Experience in compliance with Radiological Protection / IRR 99
- Competent user of MS Office
- Able to organise and prioritise own work
- Able to carry out simple arithmetic calculations
- Skilled in utilisation of technical or scientific data

**Desirable**:

- Minimum of A Level or Equivalent in Science
- Membership of appropriate technical / professional body
- Used to dealing with confidential and commercial information
- Ability to communicate with a wide range of colleagues at all levels and with external stakeholders and contractors
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 / 14001 & 45001
