Reading, United Kingdom ECMWF Full time

**Your role**:
This **Associate Scientist** position is at the forefront of research and development to design high quality hydro-meteorological climate service information that can be adopted by users. Joining us as an **Associate Scientist** you will contribute to developing new ways to evaluate forecast skill from information collected from relevant stakeholders. You will deliver forecast data to other partners to build their own EWS and help design new forecast products. Other technical activities include generating new data and evaluating forecast skill. Your role also involves designing ways to engage a range of users (e.g. through surveys and interactive on-line workshops) to gather intelligence to deliver user-centred services.

You will work in the Environmental Forecast team which is part of our Evaluation Section. This is an outstanding opportunity to benefit from hands-on experience with hydro-climate data and forecast production, closely interacting with scientists and experts in a science-driven, world-leading and innovative international organisation. In your role you will actively contribute to shaping the next generation of Early Warnings Systems, helping to mitigate against some of the most devastating impacts of the climate crisis.

**Your responsibilities**:

- Contribute to the design of activities to gather user intelligence on hydro-meteorological climate services, and support their delivery
- Contribute to the development of scientific methods for user-driven evaluation workflows to be applied to hydro-meteorological forecasts
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of hydrological forecast products
- Develop forecast evaluation scripts and conduct user-driven evaluation activities
- Generate and disseminate hydro-meteorological forecast data for specific use cases
- Write scientific documentation and extract visual outputs
- Contribute to deliverables and reporting activities and engage to projects meetings

**About ECMWF**:
The **European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)** is a world-leader in weather and environmental forecasting. As an international organisation we serve our members and the wider community with global weather predictions and data that is critical for understanding and solving the climate crisis. We function as a 24/7 research and operational centre with a focus on medium and long-range predictions, holding one of the largest meteorological data archives in the world. The success of our activities builds on the talent of our scientists and experts, strong partnerships with 35 Member and Co-operating States and the international community, some of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, and the use of innovative technologies and machine learning across our operations.

ECMWF is a multi-site organisation, with a main office in Reading, UK, a data centre/supercomputer in Bologna, Italy, and a large presence in Bonn, Germany. We appreciate the need for flexibility in the way our staff work. We adopted a hybrid work model that is widely used by staff across ECMWF - allowing everyone to work in the office working as well as remotely up to 10 days/month, including away from the duty station.

ECMWF has also developed a strong partnership with the European Union and has been entrusted with the implementation and operation of the Climate Change and Atmosphere Monitoring Services of the EU Copernicus Programme. We also contribute to the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Other areas of work include High Performance Computing and the development of digital tools that enable ECMWF to extend provision of data and products covering weather, climate, air quality, fire and flood prediction and monitoring.

**Two Climate Services and Early Warning System projects at ECMWF**:
ECWMF is a partner of two complementary projects aiming to design and deliver better hydro-meteorological-forecast information, paving the way for a new generation of user-centred EWS and climate services.

In this two projects ECMWF is in charge of developing effective users engagement activities, collecting intelligence on what users expect from EWS and climate services, designing products to communicate the skill associated with forecasts, and delivering forecast information for case studies in Europe.

ECMWF is also the **Hydrological Forecast Computing centre for Copernicus Emergency Management Service**, responsible for the operational development, production and dissemination of EFAS and GloFAS forecasts data, products and services, and to provide data for the CEMS-Drought EWS

**What we’re looking for**:

- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive and constructive approach
- Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities
- Ability to work with limited supervision and as part of multidisciplinary and geographically distributed teams
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Enthusiastic for engaging and collaborati
