The Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner is a member of the Outpatients team. The post holder will work with qualified Orthopaedic Practitioners at both St Richards and Worthing Hospitals providing support for Fracture and Orthopaedic Clinics, Virtual Fracture Clinic, Emergency Department and wards. The post holder may have to attend other Trust sites during their training to gain the relevant work experience.

You will work closely with qualified orthopaedic practitioners and the multi-disciplinary team providing support to all patients that require casting, splinting and wound care. In return you will have the opportunity to develop the skills required and study towards the British Orthopaedic Association’s British Casting Certificate. This is a fully funded residential course run over 6 weeks at Stanmore Orthopaedic Hospital, London.

The post holder must be highly motivated with excellent communication skills. You need to be willing to learn a variety of new procedures, techniques and have the ability to work as a part of the team to provide the best care for patients.

You will be expected to work as a Band 3 trainee for up to two years gaining the relevant knowledge and experience before starting your casting course. On completion and qualification you will progress to a Band 4 Orthopaedic Practitioner.

**Responsibilities**:
The post holder will undertake work involving specialist skills following satisfactory assessment and completion of competencies under direction of a trained orthopaedic practitioner.

Application of temporary casts

Application of casts in Plaster of Paris and Synthetic Casting Tapes

Application of splints and braces

Removal of casts

Management of wounds

Removal of sutures and clips

Removal of K Wires

Support manipulations and reductions

Select and issue appropriate walking aids. Adjust them and provide instructions accordingly

Assist in Fracture and Orthopaedic Clinics

Manage patient flow

Book Plaster Room appointments

Accurately document care

Ability to use all relevant IT systems

Develop an understanding of X-ray interpretation

Communicate effectively with patients, visitors and the multidisciplinary team

To provide the relevant verbal and written information to the patients and carers

Obtain informed consent from patients when carrying out programmes of care

Contribute to a team approach to patient care in conjunction with nursing colleagues, medical staff and professions allied to medicine

Help promote and maintain an environment conducive to meeting the needs of patients, their relatives and carers

Participate in regular departmental meetings and attend unit and other meetings

Contribute to the monitoring patient safety and quality

Communication

To work as part of a team ensuring effective communication with all health care professionals within the clinical team and across all disciplines.

Act as a role model within the clinical area.

Adhere to the Trust values in all working relationships to patients, carers and staff.

Teach/assess and facilitate learning for all learners in the ward area, particularly students and healthcare assistants.

Demonstrate good leadership skills and ensure that communication is effective between the patient, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team, and ensure appropriate input into patient care discussions
