Main Duties and Responsibilities The post holder will undertake work involving specialist skills following satisfactory assessment and completion of competencies under direction of a trained orthopaedic practitioner. Application of temporary casts Application of casts in Plaster of Paris and Synthetic Casting Tapes Application of splints and braces Removal of casts Management of wounds Removal of sutures and clips Removal of K Wires Support manipulations and reductions Select and issue appropriate walking aids. Adjust them and provide instructions accordingly Assist in Fracture and Orthopaedic Clinics Manage patient flow Book Plaster Room appointments Accurately document care Ability to use all relevant IT systems Develop an understanding of X-ray interpretation Communicate effectively with patients, visitors and the multidisciplinary team To provide the relevant verbal and written information to the patients and carers Obtain informed consent from patients when carrying out programmes of care Contribute to a team approach to patient care in conjunction with nursing colleagues, medical staff and professions allied to medicine Help promote and maintain an environment conducive to meeting the needs of patients, their relatives and carers Participate in regular departmental meetings and attend unit and other meetings Contribute to the monitoring patient safety and quality Communication To work as part of a team ensuring effective communication with all health care professionals within the clinical team and across all disciplines. Act as a role model within the clinical area.

Adhere to the Trust values in all working relationships to patients, carers and staff. Teach/assess and facilitate learning for all learners in the ward area, particularly students and healthcare assistants. Demonstrate good leadership skills and ensure that communication is effective between the patient, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team, and ensure appropriate input into patient care discussions Ensure communication is used effectively in the interests of patient care, including the use of handover and clinical incident reporting if necessary. Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations and recognising individuality and rights for each patient in line with Trust values.

Work effectively within a multi-racial and cultural environment Service Delivery and Improvement Take an active role in Risk Management in line with Trust and Directorate policy. Report / action any accidents, incidents or undue occurrences reported or witnessed To read and comment on proposed policies under review. Participate in the setting of standards for practice and for care involving the multi-disciplinary team Understand local audit processes and take opportunities to initiate local audit and participate in Trust audits locally Maintain awareness of Trust and National targets, ensuring that within the scope of your role you support their delivery. To have responsibility for risk management and health and safety in the workplace.

Work with the ward manager to ensure infection control procedures and cleanliness are observed in the clinical area. Deal with patient/relative complaints proactively. Assist in setting ward objectives in line with the Unit, Corporate and national objectives To undertake any other duties at the request of the line manager which are commensurate with the role, including project work, internal job rotation and absence cover. In conjunction with the Sister/Junior Sister ensure that medical supplies, central supplies and equipment are ordered and used cost effectively.

Ensure that equipment is regularly maintained and serviced in line with hospital policy and manufacturers recommendation in conjunction with the Sister/Junior Sister. Ensure that open communication occurs within the department and that all departmental staff are briefed on all items of importance for safe and effective management. To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in which he/she works Participate in the ordering and maintenance of adequate stock level in an effective manner Have an awareness of cost implications and assist in the management of resources within the clinical area e.g. equipment, supplies Have the knowledge, understanding and competence when using equipment.

Ensure its safe use and maintain clinical equipment. Adheres to Trust policy and has a personal duty of care when handling patient valuables. People Management and Development N/A Patient Care Delivery Ensure that all patients have appropriate clinical assessments and that individual requirements are met. Seek to constantly improve practice in clinical area in line with recent best practice innovations and developments.
