London, United Kingdom Financial Times Full time

**The role**

The Financial Times is seeking a new Deputy Managing Editor. This is a senior and demanding role at the heart of the FT, requiring clear communication, excellent judgement, commitment to fair-mindedness and a highly developed sense of professional responsibility.

The deputy managing editor must have the confidence and competence to manage a highly complex 600-person journalistic enterprise. This involves constantly responding to issues surrounding individual career development and pay, recruitment, travel, compliance, performance and welfare, while promoting an environment of consistency and equal opportunity.

At all times, they must uphold the principles enshrined in the FT Group Code of Conduct and the FT Editorial Code of Practice, and hold others to the highest standards of ethics and journalism.

This managerial role requires alertness, integrity and the discretion to handle confidential matters. Central to the day-to-day business is the willingness to have regular one-on-one discussions with journalists where the requests of the individual are balanced with the needs and the resources of the FT. The ability to problem-solve, appeal to common sense and be decisive is essential. As important is the perspective to look ahead to the FT’s future and interpret a constantly evolving media industry.

This role oversees correspondent safety, enforcing the protocols governing FT correspondents’ travel to dangerous places and anticipating risks.

This senior role will deputise for the managing editor at all levels including the Assistant Editor meetings and union consultations. The job involves line management responsibilities and oversight of non-journalistic roles within Editorial.

A sense of humour, patience and resilience are valuable. This is a testing, unrelenting operational role where standing one's ground and doing what is right in the face of argument is essential. The deputy managing editor has to be a conscientious team player who can work closely with the Managing Editor, the Editorial management team, HR and colleagues across the FT.
