Number of jobs available- 1
- Region- South West
- City/Town- Bodmin, Launceston
- Building/Site- Sir John Moore House, Pennygillam Depot
- Grade- Staff Grade 4
- Post Type- Permanent
- Working Pattern- Full Time
- Role Type- Science
- Salary Minimum- £29,706
- Job description- We’re proud to promote a safe, inclusive, flexible & supportive culture at the Environment Agency, as a life-enhancing place to work, creating better places for people and wildlife.
If you are an enthusiastic & passionate freshwater chemist or environmental scientist/geologist interested in the metal impact of historic mining in Devon & Cornwall, a strong team player who can achieve results and adopt changing priorities quickly, join us & develop in a really fulfilling role.
The core work is monitoring & assessing the impact of acid mine drainage from abandoned metal mines on our freshwater catchments. This involves fieldwork, data assessment, source apportionment modelling & reporting. We also support pollution, drought & flooding incident response.
The role is full of variety & there are many opportunities to build expertise & we provide specialist training.
- We work together in the field; undertaking water sampling, flow monitoring & some ecological assessment.
- From our offices we interpret our data & write compelling reports to inform & influence, protecting the environment through advice, regulation & enforcement. We also share our data & findings with others in person to affect change, ideally in creating treatment options.
Responding to incidents is a key responsibility & you will be required to have an incident role & make yourself available to respond to environmental incidents & may choose to contribute to other incidents. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with any incident role.
Our working patterns and locations are reasonably flexible, depending on the business need. Field work will predominantly cover Cornwall and the west of Devon. We develop our people, seek to achieve real outcomes for the environment, enjoy our work enormously & we commit to an inclusive, safe, fair and empowering culture.
- The team- In Analysis & Reporting we are a diverse mix of environmental scientists, with different backgrounds & specialisms, passionate about our area & our work, striving hard together to help create a better environment, for the wildlife dependent upon it & the people who live in this beautiful & environmentally rich part of the country. Join us & together we’ll make a difference in Devon, Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly.
- Experience/skills required- A chemistry, environmental science or geology based technical degree or sufficient relevant freshwater chemistry experience will provide a strong base for this post as would experience through other routes.
A foundation in freshwater chemistry, geology or minewater chemistry plus familiarity with general field survey methodologies would demonstrate potential for success in this role.
Conducting water samples, measuring flow, populating databases, data interpretation & reporting are core work, as is involvement in pollution response & other incident management activities across the organisation’s remit.
In addition there are opportunities to be involved in all our diverse monitoring commission across the team, from water quality & ecological quality assessment through to salmon & sea trout trapping & migration assessment.
Driving is required for out of office activities & a sound health & safety culture is essential for lab & field work especially.
- Contact and additional information- This role is location-based, within the area covered by the team, predominantly working face to face with others although within a hybrid working model, balancing essential face to face working with colleagues in the office/lab & off site with partners & others, field working around our Area, along with flexible home working as appropriate. Team vans, pool cars & hire cars are made available for work travel. Contributing to incident management & certain fieldwork may require occasional unsociable hours working & training may require overnight stays. We value & promote a diverse workforce & are fully committed to being an inclusive employer.
