This is a 12-month post with the Hand and Upper Limb team including potential on call commitments on the postgraduate doctor in training rota. There is a possibility of extension of the employment period. It provides an excellent opportunity to experience a broad and concentrated exposure to all aspects of hand and upper limb surgery in children as well as brachial plexus surgery, microsurgery, tumour surgery. The post is suitable for plastic end of training or post CCT fellows with pre-existing experience in hand surgery.

The department has an active research activity with regular participation in national and international meetings.

There is an expectation to participate in research, presentation, and publication.

This is a paid full-time post. It is expected that the Senior Fellow will participate in all Departmental activities including on call, daily ward rounds, trauma list commitments, audit, and teaching. Principal attachment will be to the Hand and Upper Limb Service.

Normal Working day consists of covering the department unit according to the rota provided each week

Attend, assist and independently run outpatient clinics (with support of senior colleagues)

Assist in the evaluation of patients

Participate in multidisciplinary clinic

Preoperative assessment and preparation, surgery and postoperative care of patients

Attend the Emergency Department to assess, plan and deliver treatment of patients referred

Participate in on call

Assist in the clinical teaching activities of the department

Assist in organizing weekly patient review meetings

Cover other colleagues in their absence

Conduct active audit and research

Forward Thinking Birmingham (FTB) Mental Health Services are a unique, innovative community and inpatient mental health partnership. Alongside partners FTB offers care pathways of mental health assessment and treatment for young people aged 0-25 years old.

This service provides a comprehensive referral service for the assessment and management of children with Hand and Upper Limb problems from Birmingham, the West Midlands and beyond. The service is currently managed by two Plastic Surgeons/Hand Surgeons and one orthopedic surgeon (Andrea Jester, Christina Lipede and Andy Gaffey), as well as 2.5 Occupational therapists. The Lead for the Hand and Upper Limb service is currently Dr med Andrea Jester.

The service is the largest of its kind in the UK and Europe. The team works very closely with other orthopedic specialists, interventional radiologists, neurologists, rheumatologists, therapists and currently deliver over 50 MDT clinics per year in the following complex upper limb subspecialties, i.e.:
Congenital hand clinic

General hand clinic

Cerebral Palsy of the Upper Limb,

Arthrogryposis

Complex forearm deformities

Obstetric brachial plexus palsy

Vascular anomalies

Pediatric rheumatoid conditions of the upper limb.

Adaptive sports clinic

Overgrowth clinic

Poland’s syndrome clinic

The service is also an integral part of the inherited metabolic and Epidermolysis bullosa service.

The service is part of the rare diseases’ strategy of the region.

There is a close working relationship within the hand as well as wider plastic surgical team and a supportive and educational environment.
