**Job summary**:
The MOD’s Key responsibility is to protect the security, independence and interests of the UK, at home and abroad, working closely with our allies and partners. Chief Operating Officer (COO) Organisation directly leads the corporate enabling functions of Legal and Safety and has recently also taken the lead of the Security function, with the Directorate of Security and Resilience (DSR) team. COO is focused on raising the profile of resilience across Defence, including Head Office, delivering the MOD’s security and operational responsibilities across the world.

The Directorate of Security and Resilience (DSR) branch in MOD Head Office is responsible for developing, promulgating and monitoring the Department’s protective security policy and resilience standards, and for advising Ministers and senior officials on a wide range of issues related to protective security policy. DSR sets policy for personnel security, including vetting; policing and physical security, including guarding; nuclear security; and technical and international security issues, including the security relationship with Defence industry.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

**Job description**:
This Band D post in the Vetting team in DSR is one of nine posts undertaking personnel security clearance (Vetting) casework on Civil Servants and Defence Contractors for high risk, complex and contentious cases.

We are looking for an extraordinary individual who is a team player, energetic and enthusiastic, always able to multi-task and who enjoys being flexible.

**Person specification**:
As part of our Vetting Casework Team, this busy and demanding role requires the post-holder to use initiative to organise their workload to meet competing and often changing deadlines. You will need to be prepared to work flexibly to support colleagues and priority demands.
- Use sound judgement, evidence and knowledge to arrive at accurate, expert and professional decisions whilst ensuring all information is handled appropriately and with care, upholding the ‘vetting in confidence’ principle.
- Assess and make decisions on security clearances, considering whether any identified risks can be mitigated, consulting the local risk owner where appropriate.
- Manage case files ensuring that receipt/return is logged in the receipt book.
- Monitor the DSR multi-user inbox daily, reviewing new enquiries and effectively prioritising them in order of urgency and importance.
- Advise key stakeholders (such as human resources and the security community) on referrals regarding postings, appointments and access to sensitive material.
- Manage the daily triaging of new referrals into the team.
- Create appeal pack which includes briefing material and an Appeal Hearing Introduction for the delegated Deciding Officer.

Essential Skills:

- Excellent writing skills.
- Due to regular engagement with stakeholders the post holder must demonstrate strong interpersonal and organisational skills.
- The post holder needs be a self-starter and be able to proactively identify emerging issues and have an aptitude for seeking out solutions to them.
- Proficient IT skills with a good knowledge of using excel and outlook.
