**Senior Reporter - EGR**

Senior reporters are self-sufficient in terms of generating story ideas, developing sources, making sense of information, structuring stories and meeting deadlines. They have a good understanding of our readers and the way they write their stories reflects this. Their stories require mínimal editing; they understand house style and how to structure stories. Through the quality of their work and their professionalism they are examples for other reporters in our department to follow. Below is a more detailed list of minimum qualifications senior reporters must meet. These requirements will vary depending on the publication.

You’d be joining an editorial team with more than three decades combined experience of the sector who are looking to add to an excellent team with a stellar hire. EGR also hosts several awards and summits throughout the year bringing together the leading figures in the industry.

**Responsibilities**:

- Regularly break news and have a strong sense of what makes a good story
- Turn stories around quickly when necessary
- Develop story ideas from a variety of sources including studies, industry executives and sources, regulatory filings, etc.
- Report and write analytical stories, uncovering wider trends by synthesising separate events that occur within the industry
- Are adept at reporting and writing exclusive stories by localising broader developments in the economy that have an impact on the industry covered
- Know what context and depth to include in a story
- Write clean copy that needs mínimal editing, i.e. house style is correct, structure is appropriate for readers, story lead is succinct and clear, why the news is happening is clearly explained and the context that’s important for readers is included
- Can edit other reporters’ stories when asked to do so
- Know which sources to go to for comment or insight on a particular story
- Write articles that are accurate and balanced with the appropriate context and depth
- Have the judgment to report the real story rather than the angle a specific source is pushing
- Can moderate panels, webinars and discussions with senior industry figures

**Key responsibilities include**:

- Autonomy: The ability to generate stories and story ideas with little guidance. Ability to work independently and get the job done consistently with little attention from the editor.
- Reliability: A senior reporter must be able to be relied upon by the editor consistently generate copy, especially when other stories fall through. In emergency situations the senior reporter will be called upon to pick up the slack
- Clean Copy: The ability to generate clean copy consistently that seldom needs much reworking. Copy is always free of inaccuracies and grammatical errors.
- Consistent Copy Flow: Stories must come in consistently every day. Daily deadlines must be adhered to strictly.
- Management Responsibilities: The senior reporter must be able to step in and handle some production duties and edit copy in extreme cases, or if the editor is on vacation.
- Knowledge: The senior reporter is expected to master the content of his\her beat and develop a working knowledge of the other beats. The senior reporter may be called upon for ideas and opinions regarding future editorial changes to the publication.
- Professional Demeanour: The senior reporter is expected to always maintain a professional demeanour, aid less-senior reporters with questions or advice.

**Requirements**:

- Possess strong understanding of the gambling and sports betting industry to spot important developments and trends before the competition
- Have a network of sources that can provide insights for stories and tips that lead to exclusive coverage
- Are always developing and cultivating new sources
- Demonstrate a keen understanding of readers’ information needs
- Can provide necessary context and insights to build out a story and increase readers’ understanding of an issue
