You don’t need to be an animal or conservation expert to undertake this role. We'd love to hear from people from all backgrounds, but you must enjoy chatting to people and want to support them to enjoy their time at the Zoo.

Role Profile:
**Purpose of role/project**:
At ZSL London and Whipsnade Zoos, we encourage and welcome everyone to enjoy time connecting with wildlife at our Zoos. Our goal is to create an experience that is accessible for people of all needs and abilities. This commitment to accessibility has us working with local people and specialist organisations to learn how we can improve and make positive changes to ensure every visitor has a wonderful experience.

The role of Community Engagement Volunteers is to champion and support the delivery of London Zoo’s accessible, inclusive, activity, primarily through:

- Supporting the Supported Volunteer Scheme (SVS) as Team Leaders which takes place weekdays
- Supporting the team to deliver inclusive engagement on site throughout the year

There is also the option to support the team with ad hoc office-based and administrative tasks related to the programme.

**Commitment for role**:
At least half a day a fortnight on average, although the exact commitment will vary through the year depending on the scale and scope of the programming we are delivering, e.g. Some events will be full day events, so that may be the only time you volunteer with us that month.

**ZSL Contact/Supervisor**:

- General support: Volunteer Management Team

**Main tasks volunteer will be asked to undertake**:
We are primarily looking for volunteers to support the practical face-to-face delivery of London Zoo’s accessible events as follows, please note most activities take place during the week:

- Supporting the Supported Volunteer Scheme (SVS) as Team Leaders on weekdays, including:

- Being the liaison/contact point between the SVS group and department in which the activity is taking place
- Preparing for SVS sessions to take place - set-up and pack-down
- Leading briefings for SVS sessions
- Being on hand for the duration of the SVS sessions to support volunteers with the activity
- Supporting volunteers to undertake practical gardening, maintenance and animal enclosure tasks.
- Supporting the team to deliver inclusive engagement on site, including:

- Community Engagement events, accessible activities, and projects on site at London Zoo e.g., Silver Sunday
- ‘Meet ZSL London Zoo’ outreach and on-site sessions
- Delivering British Sign Language support at events or activities (if appropriate)

There is scope to also support the team with ad hoc office-based and administrative tasks related to the programme, which would include:

- Supporting administration of the Community Access Scheme and Community Engagement events
- Supporting the maintenance of the community partnership database

Prospective volunteers will be asked to indicate their availability to volunteer and if they are also interested in helping with ad hoc administration at interview.

**Anticipated skills and experience that the volunteer will bring**:

- A passion for working with people.
- Enthusiasm for improving access for all who want to visit London Zoo, and some awareness of accessibility initiatives is nice to have.
- Confidence in communicating with groups and individuals.
- Good physical fitness as accessibility events can involve lots of walking around the zoo and practical hands-on tasks.
- Experience and enjoyment in outdoor tasks, including gardening, is **desirable but not essential**.
- Patience and excellent listening skills.
- Some British Sign Language ability (Level 2 or higher) is **desirable but not essential **(ZSL is unable provide training in this area).
- Reliability, commitment, and regular attendance.
- If wishing to support with ad hoc administration, good IT literacy and ability to use Microsoft programmes including Excel.
- Ability to demonstrate ZSL’s values - inspiring, innovative, impactful, collaborative, ethical.
