**About us**:
University College London (UCL) is one of the world's top universities. Based in the heart of London, it is a dynamic, outward-looking institution. At its establishment in 1826, UCL was radical and responsive to the needs of society, and this ethos - that excellence should go hand-in-hand with enriching society - continues today.

The Institute for Global Prosperity at UCL (IGP) is redesigning prosperity for the 21st century, changing the way we conceive and run our economies, and reworking our relationship with the planet. IGP's vision is to build a prosperous, sustainable, global future, underpinned by the principles of fairness and justice, and allied to a realistic, long-term vision of humanity's place in the world.

The UCL Department of Geography is a leading UK and global department, with a heritage of excellence in research across a broad range of research themes.

This post is to lead the co-design, delivery and evaluation of a new UCL Citizen Science Academy research training programme with Act Early and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The post will be held in the Department of Geography, under the supervision of Prof Muki Haklay, but the work itself will be carried out mostly in the Institute for Global Prosperity.

**About the role**:
UCL’s Citizen Science Academy is an innovative new initiative offering community-based, practice-led research education and training to empower citizens to lead change through social action and shaping policies that impact their livelihoods. UCL’s Citizen Science Academy is based at the Institute for Global Prosperity and has been designed in partnership with UCL’s Office for Open Science.

This fixed-term post is part of a new collaboration with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and ActEarly, an innovative research consortium focused on early life interventions to improve the health and opportunities for children living in two areas with high levels of child poverty: Tower Hamlets, east London, and Bradford, Yorkshire. ActEarly works with local communities, voluntary sector organisations, local authorities, public health agencies, and universities, to develop research to inform evidence-based decision-making.

The post-holder will work with community, voluntary sector, local authority, public health, and ActEarly stakeholders to co-design a citizen science research programme that builds on ActEarly’s community engagement and co-production work in Tower Hamlets. The post-holder will be responsible for co-design, development, delivery, and evaluation of a new Citizen Science Academy research education and training programme developed to support citizen scientists from local communities to address locally-determined research priorities. The course will be co-designed, delivered and evaluated in 2024.

IGP’s PROCOL UK team manage the Citizen Science Academy. The post-holder will report to Prof Muki Haklay in Geography and Dr Saffron Woodcraft, Executive Lead for PROCOL UK and Head of the Citizen Science Academy.

**This is a part time 0.6FTE, fixed term post with funding available until 31**st** March 2025 The appointment is available to start as soon as possible.**

**About you**:
Experience of working with local communities to co-design community-based participatory research projects, of community development and capacity-building in context of research and running activities that are similar to the UCL Citizen Science Academy is essential. Also essential is knowledge and experience of approaches to citizen science including use of qualitative research methods and the ability to develop, on the basis of the literature, a research programme to evaluate the UCL Citizen Science Academy process and the impact on participants, the local authority, and other stakeholders. Familiarity with East London communities and Tower Hamlets in particular is desirable.
- _Appointment at Grade 7 Research Fellow is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD or relevant experience commensurate with a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis._
