The priority work Natural England is delivering includes:

- Establishing a Nature Recovery Network to help wildlife thrive
- Monitoring environmental changes to identify and help reduce the effects of climate change
- Working with farmers and landowners to develop greener food production methods
- Advising on plans for new developments to maximise gains for nature, and

Job description

The team

The Natural England Wildlife Licensing Service (NEWLS) assists sustainable development through effective regulation and advice to developers and ensures the suitable management of human-wildlife conflict through advice and regulation. It also drives the growth of district level licensing (DLL) for great crested newts across local planning authorities in England.

The DLL Team within NEWLS form a diverse and innovative group with a culture of teamworking. We work collectively to evolve and grow the scheme, and have links across NE to communicate learning, test ideas and tell our story. We are also dedicated to evaluating this landscape scale approach to conservation, making it work for this wonderful species as well as describing the wider benefits associated with of re-establishing ponds across the landscape.

Our results

In the last four years we have secured over £30m of developer contributions and created over 2800 ponds across England. We are delighted with the results of the early adopting scheme areas with newt occupancy rates in our ponds above those of existing ponds in the areas.

DLL for great crested newts is a forerunner for much of the work NE is currently doing on species conservation strategies, biodiversity net gain and local nature recovery strategies. The award-winning scheme uses financial contributions from development to create and restore ponds in the best places for newts to thrive. We can’t deliver this without our fantastic habitat delivery partners, and we work closely with them to fund and deliver a steady supply of ponds, in the right places.

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the innovative and experienced DLL Team. Working with species specialists, internal and external partners, the Senior Adviser role will manage and deliver projects to evaluate the performance of DLL in delivering positive outcomes for this iconic species. The role will also involve working with other DLL providers in evaluating and regulating their schemes, and considering how the lessons learnt from implementing DLL can be applied to the delivery models for biodiversity net gain and other potential protected species reforms. The role will also involve the development, renewal and assessment of local DLL strategies, which assess the impact of development on local populations of great crested newt.

We are seeking original thinkers with strong analytical skills and an eye for detail as well as operational deliverers with excellent customer service skills. Good project and time management skills are essential, and an inherent ability to build networks within the organisation and partnerships with our stakeholders.

**Key tasks/accountabilities**
