**Job summary**:
We are advertising for a **Senior Geospatial Information Specialist** for the Bathymetry team to specifically focus on managing the Defence Bathymetric Database.

In the Bathymetric Team large but fluctuating quantities of bathymetric data are received throughout the year. It is important that the quality of this data is verified before it is incorporated into Caris Bathy DataBASE and passed to the charting areas. Being mindful of timescales and the different pressures of both internal and external demands, the post holder is required to be capable of skilled processing, verification, and peer review of data prior to entry into the bathymetric database and to provide advice on all aspects of survey processing matters. The role will also include the requirement to support and train data suppliers including the Royal Navy (RN) to improve the quality of data collect and processing.

The defence requirements of this role involve acting as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Defence bathymetric processing systems and databases, and continued development of the UKHO of the Route SurveyDatabase. The postholder will act as a technical liaison for UK and international defence collaborations, including advice and guidance to internal UKHO teams and FG navies on the handling of Defence bathymetric data. Along with management of the Ocean Survey Programme (OSP) data through Data Refinement System (DRS), the role includes acting as Defence Bathymetry Data Steward, ensuring Defence Bathymetric data standards and governance policies are defined and improved.

**This is a Reserved Post. The post holder is required to hold DV security clearance.**

Due to the nature of the role, the post holder would need to be onsite at the Taunton Office most of the time. During the initial training period, it would be advisable to work from the office full time. This is estimated at 4 weeks. There is also a monthly team “in the office” day which you would be expected to attend where possible.

**Job description**:
In the Defence Bathymetry Database role, tasks are as follows:

- ** Geospatial data management**

Management of the Defence bathymetric data and metadata ensuring quality, availability, and resilience aligning with security expectations.

Ensure archiving of datasets and associated metadata are completed accurately and that they are fit for purpose.

Fulfil Data Steward responsibilities for Bathymetry.

Maintaining familiarisation and understanding of MOD, JGI, RN and UKHO data release policies and MoU agreements.
- **
Geospatial data capture and modelling**

Fulfilling expertise requests for technical support and data from internal defence customers, including SOS, MDT, SMENC and AML.

Technical lead support of bathymetric data discussions with key Defence collaborators.

Verify and peer review incoming acoustic, and remotely collected bathymetric datasets including seabed texture datasets.

Geospatial data manipulation**

Providing technical support and final validation for incoming complex bathymetric datasets and highly classified OSP datasets.

Process and validate surveys using CARIS HIPs and SIPs, CARIS BASE Editor and Qimera to improve data quality whilst adhering to good data management principles to ensure processed data meets specification.

Geospatial data standards and quality**

Acting as UKHO technical lead during TECHEVAL, on board HMS SCOTT, providing immediate advice and assessment of data quality.

Ensure second generation navigation standards are optimised for the defence customers' needs liaising closely with the UKHO commercial S-102 team.

Prepare text and graphics for reports and be involved in discussions with other UK government bodies and foreign governments in respect to bathymetry.
