The post will be based primarily at City Hospital. The post holder may be required to work at any of the Trust’s sites. On call duties (non-resident) will be for neonates only (there is a separate rota for on-call general paediatrics). On call frequency will be approximately 1 in 7.5 and we run a service of the week rota for daytime cover with one consultant in intensive care & HDU and another in special care & the transitional care unit.

To provide day time neonatal service and out-of-hours cover

To develop a special interest in neonatal medicine to complement those of the existing consultants

To undertake a regular neonatal follow up clinic

To take on an appropriate lead role as required by the neonatal department

To participate in supervision and appraisal of junior medical staff and advanced neonatal nurse practitioners

To participate in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students and advanced neonatal nurse practitioners

To participate in research and contribute to the development of neonatal medicine and treatment guidelines

**To demonstrate a commitment to clinical governance, including**:
Contributing to neonatal clinical audit

Participating in the Trust’s Quality Improvement Programme

Participating in the Trust’s Clinical Incident Reporting system

Providing independent review of significant incidents and mortality cases

Developing a programme of personal continuing professional development

Providing response to parent complaints

Providing reports to external organisations (eg Coroners report, safeguarding reports etc)

Information about the Specialty

Neonatal services are part of the Maternity and Perinatal Medicine directorate. The neonatal unit is a designated Level 2/Local Neonatal Unit with 29 designated cots (5 intensive care cots, 5 high dependency cots and 19 special care cots) and 4 designated transitional care cots on the postnatal ward. The neonatal unit accepts babies from 27 weeks gestation upwards (including most congenital anomalies) and provides short-term intensive care for up to 48 hours. Babies started on Nitric oxide/HFOV and on Therapeutic Hypothermia are stabilised and transferred to a neonatal intensive care unit. Our unit undertakes high activity levels of about 3000 days intensive/high dependency care, 5270 special care days and 3200 transitional care days per year. The maternity department caters for approximately 6000 deliveries per year and has a dedicated fetal medicine unit.

Neonatal Service cover

Neonatal consultants provide exclusive cover for the neonatal unit on a daily basis. This ensures 24 hour cover as follows:
A 'Hot-week' consultant covers ITU/HDU 0830 to 1730 (Weekdays-Mondays to Fridays) with ‘on call’ provision thereafter.

Second consultant covers SCBU/TC 08:30 - 14:30 (Weekdays-Mondays to Fridays).

**Weekends are split into Saturday and Sundays**: Consultant on site 08:30-14:30 with ‘on call’ provision thereafter.

Service weeks and oncall frequency are expected to be approximately 1 in 7.5.

The Tier 1 rota is 1 in 9, whilst the tier 2 rota is 1 in 8. Staff on both rotas comprise of speciality trainees, junior speciality doctors (trust doctors) and advanced neonatal nurse practitioners. The rotas are EWTD and BAPM compliant.
