Job description

**Main purpose of job**:To strengthen the Mammal Society’s work promoting and supporting evidence-based conservation of mammals by developing and managing systems for collecting, storing, analysing and presenting data on the distribution and behaviour of mammals, conducting or coordinating research and literature reviews into mammal science and conservation, and supporting local groups and individuals to contribute to Mammal Society surveys and research.

**Place of Work**:Home, with a minimum of four face-to-face team meetings (at different locations around the UK, sometimes involving overnight stays) for which travel expenses will be paid.

Depending on the location, desk space may be arranged in universities and partner offices for particular work or on a more consistent basis if this is preferred or required.

**Background to the Mammal Society**

Established in 1954 we are a UK based charity devoted to the study and conservation of the mammals of the British Isles. We aim to raise awareness of the issues mammals face and share our scientific research so they can be best protected in the future. A small team of staff delivers big results through coordination and promotion of surveys, trainings, campaigns, publications and events that inspire, inform and mobilise our members and supporters and support the work of grassroots mammal groups and individual volunteers.

Following a change in leadership, The Mammal Society is undergoing a period of review and refresh in its vision, mission and approach. We are seeking a talented, enthusiastic Data and Research Officer with a passion for nature, science and conservation who will help us to put strong foundations in place so that we can deliver maximum positive impact for mammals through our work.

**Key Responsibilities**

**Data**
- Review and refine the Mammal Society’s systems and processes for collecting and storing data on mammal presence and distribution.
- Advise the CEO on software, policies and strategy relating to collection, storage, reporting and licencing of data, including the short and long term development of the Mammal Society’s own Mammal Mapper app and other bespoke tools.
- Export and present Mammal Society data as required to inform internal and external research, communications, publications and PR.
- Prepare data sharing agreements and licences as required.
- Work with colleagues to develop resources and training for local groups, supporters and schools that support their effective participation in Mammal Society surveys
- Lead on analysis and reporting on data collected from local groups, supporters and schools to identify and communicate results from surveys.

**Research**
- Support Science Project Officers and freelance researchers to access, interpret and analyse Mammal Society data on mammal populations.
- Conduct literature reviews and field research as required to support and inform Mammal Society priorities.

**Other**
- Support local groups, students and supporters to play a role in mammal monitoring and conservation by responding to enquiries about surveys and data collection techniques with information and guidance.
- Provide support for other Mammal Society initiatives and events as requested by the CEO.

**Person Specification**

No applicant is expected to embody every aspect of the person specification. Training and development support will be offered.
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience
- Proven data analysis skills
- Proven knowledge of biodiversity monitoring and recording schemes
- Proven skills in spreadsheets, word processing and presentation software
- Experience of working with large data sets
- Proven knowledge of British mammals and conservation issues
- Excellent written communication skills
- Effective time-management and organisational skills
- An eye for detail and commitment to accuracy
- Ability to work well independently and with a team
- Initiative and resourcefulness, ability to innovate and problem-solve
- Excellent time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously
- Able to give, receive and respond to feedback constructively
- Adaptability and flexibility, able and willing to respond quickly to challenges and opportunities
- Familiarity with GIS would be an advantage
- Familiarity with coding in R and/or other data analysis programming language would be an advantage
- Evaluation and reporting skills and experience
- Ability to think strategically and identify ways to improve programmes in light of feedback or evaluation
