The Role

We are looking for a Clinical Psychologist with expertise in Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) and specifically anti - racism work to join our DClinPsy programme team.

This opportunity is available as a secondment on a competitive salary for a period of 12 months, on a part time basis (4 hours per week)

You will lead on the delivery of an Action Plan developed with Higher Education England (HEE) with the aims of increasing the recruitment of racially minoritised applicants to the profession of clinical psychology on our programme at Newcastle.

You will work with the Academic Director to lead this strategy, which is to increase representation to the programme and support the racially minoritised trainees during their training on the programme. You will also work alongside the programme’s EDI committee which consists of current trainees, staff and NHS regional clinicians. All EDI initiatives are co-developed with the committee, with actions and progress being reviewed at each meeting.

The DClinPsy programme team is based within the School of Psychology which is committed to providing the highest level of clinical psychology training consistent with BPS/HCPC requirements and values EDI work as central to its strategy and vision.

The role can be undertaken flexibly with some teaching and meetings in person required but otherwise much of the work can be undertaken remotely, around your working pattern.

Key Accountabilities
To lead an agreed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) plan to support action to improve equity and inclusion for racially minoritised trainees and deliver on the Action Plan
To deliver and expand our Mentoring Scheme initiative, widening the dissemination of the scheme by further developing links and building relationships with other organisations and groups (e.g. local Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), schools and other relevant groups) to increase awareness, develop and target advertising, and support the additional recruitment of mentors and mentee applicants
To contribute to selection processes, aiming to ensure ethnically representative selection processes by improving racially diverse representation within our selection team as well as examining existing selection criteria and processes for implicit bias/discrimination
To co-ordinate the development and delivery of an improved support package for trainees from racially minoritised backgrounds. This may include providing groups with individualised support where required or preferred
To co-ordinate/oversee the delivery of Anti-Racism training to programme staff, trainees and course contributors (such as placement supervisors) on recognising and managing issues relating to power, privilege, prejudices, whiteness and the history/impact of systemic racism within the profession through workshops, reflective groups, recommended reading and self-directed study
To draft an explicit, specific, zero-tolerance policy which includes clear processes for reporting on and dealing with racism across all training experiences
To work alongside members of the team to review data on retention of newly qualified racially minoritised clinical psychologists within the region.
To attend and contribute to the work of the EDI committee and other programme committees as relevant
To audit teaching provided to trainees regarding the inclusion of EDI and anti-racist themes and to evaluate trainee feedback as part of this process
To keep informed about national developments through attendance at relevant Group of Trainers in Clinical Psychology meetings as appropriate
To contribute and participate in the regional Anti-Racism Community of Practice

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
An understanding of the roles of clinical psychology within the UK healthcare system and the NHS and the function of clinical training in supporting these roles
Commitment to clinical psychology research and training
Experience of designing and implementing anti-racism initiatives and/or training within clinical psychology
Evidence of employment as a clinician in a health care setting
Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workload, work under pressure and to meet multiple deadlines
Ability and willingness to work in emotionally-charged situations and to support those with high levels of distress
Desirable
Experience and understanding of EDI and anti-racism initiatives within clinical psychology within the northeast region
Understanding of intersectionality/other disadvantaged groups with reference to access to the profession of clinical psychology
Experience of teaching/training within clinical psychology programmes
