**Contract **12 months fixed-term contract for maternity cover

**ABOUT HAREWOOD**

Harewood House Trust is an educational charity which engages 250,000 visitors every year through our three outstanding collections - art, garden and living - with a 30-year commitment to contemporary programming, that links them. It is one of England’s finest 18th century country houses, with a magnificent collection of fine and decorative arts; an accredited museum, with a nationally designated collection, it is also the family seat of the Earl and Countess of Harewood.

As an educational charitable trust, Harewood’s key objectives are:

- to preserve for the benefit of the public the House, Gardens and Collections
- to promote the study and appreciation of the arts and sciences
- to provide facilities for recreation.

Alongside the care, conservation and interpretation of the core collection, Harewood runs a series of innovative exhibitions of contemporary as well as historic art. The Trust also has a commercial arm that manages its trading operation including major outdoor events, conferences, corporate functions, fine dining, cafés and other retail and food outlets
throughout the site.

In 2021, Harewood celebrated 250 years since the House was completed. The Trust has great ambitions for Harewood’s future, as well as celebrating its fascinating past, including working on a potential masterplan to ensure Harewood’s conservation, its longevity and its relevance to audiences today.

**JOB SUMMARY**

You will work closely with the Senior Gardener to ensure the Walled Garden and its associated gardens and features, including the kitchen garden, orchard, frame yard, Bothy, rose garden and lawns are presented to a high standard and maintained in a safe, clean and tidy condition.

This incorporates productive kitchen gardening, ornamental horticulture and grounds maintenance. The Gardener in the Walled Garden is expected to carry out work in other areas and provide assistance to other teams across the site as required by the Head Gardener. Some aspects of this role are physically demanding and it requires working in all weathers. Safety checks, Risk Assessments and record keeping all form an important part of the role.

**KEY RESULTS AREAS**
- Work closely with the Senior Gardener and Head Gardener to plan and implement horticultural work programmes and grounds maintenance schedules in the gardens as assigned
- Plan, implement and supervise productive fruit and vegetable cultivation programmes, ornamental planting schemes and general maintenance work in the Walled Garden and its associated gardens and features.
- Enthuse, organise, and supervise trainees and volunteers as assigned
- Abide by the Trust’s Health & Safety Policy, carry out Risk Assessments, COSHH Asessments and Manual Handling Assessments
- Ensure that all machinery and equipment are used correctly and maintained in good condition; carry out safety checks and report defects
- Deliver high quality work whilst helping others to achieve collective team goals
- Participate in the process of staff training and development
- Engage with visitors, host guided tours and implement interpretation programmes as required to deliver the best possible experience of Harewood and its Gardens
- Assist with the design, planning, installation and maintenance of special projects, exhibitions and seasonal activities throughout the grounds and gardens as required
- Be aware of and constantly vigilant to the risks of fire, theft and flood and at all times observe the current instructions regarding fire and security issued by Harewood House Trust
