Job overview
The post holder will be required to plan, organise, manage and deliver therapeutic play and leisure activities on this new research unit. This role will require independent working on the unit, however you will also work closely with the hospital play team to ensure you get further learning opportunities and a support network.
The Post holder should be a qualified Healthcare play specialist (HPS) and registered with HPSET. They may also hold the NNEB or CACHE Diploma in nursery nursing or BTEC National Diploma in nursery nursing/childhood studies or equivalent.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to plan, organise, manage and deliver therapeutic play using preparation, distraction and post procedural play techniques and providing leisure activities on this new research unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The post holder will be required to work autonomously and flexibly.
- To provide a welcoming, child friendly atmosphere with a caring, attitude towards children and their families.
- To act as the child’s advocate ensuring the child’s best interests come first.
- Drawing upon you knowledge of the research process: Devise and implement play preparation tailored to each child’s individual needs and review regularly. These tailored interventions will aid recruitment and retention of children and young people into research programmes.
- Be involved in family support, liaising with other professionals, as necessary and to attend Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings and case conferences as required.
- Liaise with any members of the hospital play team who may be working with a trust patient and family prior to their visits to the CRF, in order that any current interventions can be incorporated and built upon, ensuring the child and family receive a consistent approach to their care.
- To be responsible for ensuring that up to date written records and activity data are maintained in accordance with professional and trust standards. This should be inclusive of ensuring that your assessment of the therapeutic play programmes implemented within the CRF for current trust patients are fed back to the appropriate play team within the trust.
- Understand the need and the use of preparation, distraction, post procedural and passive play and implement this to support the child and family through their participation in research programmes.
- To understand the need for and initiate the use of specialised therapeutic play
- To initiate and participate in preparation and distraction for invasive/painful procedures.
- Work with the child’s family as a whole, respecting their needs and wishes whilst providing the best care for the child.
- To provide written and verbal reports as required and ensure familiarity with documentation.
- Liaise with other professionals within the multi-disciplinary team issues concerning the child’s physical, emotional and social needs.
- Be aware of issues regarding confidentiality both within the CRF and within the team.
- Be responsible for the general maintenance of toys and equipment as required.
- To teach parents as requested in the occupation of their child.
- To be responsible to the child and their family to ensure that correct preparation for procedures is given.
- Attend unit/play staff meetings.
- To provide play cover on wards when required.
- To take an active role in the training of nursery nursing, nursing, medical and Hospital Play Specialist students and completing their reports.
