All adult patients admitted to St Helier Hospital should have their smoking status recorded and their smoking habits documented in line with the public health agenda. The post holder will be able to work with mínimal supervision to assist clinical teams in providing smoking cessation support to help smokers who want to stop smoking, will be able to use Trust systems to undertake administrative duties (training can be given) and will have a passion for promoting the health of our community.
- Provide stop smoking support to identified adult inpatients
- Work with the Lead Nurse for Tobacco Dependency to develop and implement stop smoking services
- Assist with administration of associated data collection and collation
- Promote the general health and wellbeing of our inpatients and colleagues
- Work with mínimal indirect supervision
- Escalate and record any possible safeguarding issues

The role of Tobacco Dependency Advisor will form part of a small but effective team who will be introducing and running a smoking cessation service for inpatients. The team will work collaboratively with colleagues from the Trust to introduce the Tobacco Dependency service, signposting service users to resources to help them make a quit attempt, promoting training amongst our colleagues and preparing data for submission to our external partners.

Clinical Responsibilities
- Working alongside clinical staff to ensure all adult inpatient smokers are offered a referral to the opt out Trust smoking cessation service, in order to facilitate and maintain a quit attempt through a personalised care plan, including advising on the use of nicotine replacement therapy.
- Assist in delivering training to Trust staff on how to give Very Brief Advice (VBA) and evidence based smoking cessation interventions.
- Establish and maintain communication with patients, relatives and carers, working in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to provide holistic patient care
- Assist in maintaining own and others’ health, safety and security
- Ensure own actions help to maintain quality and patient safety
- Undertake routine assessment tasks related to individuals’ health and well-being, making modifications within prescribed parameters and reporting back to line manager on patients’ progress
- Assist in delivering programmes of care to meet individuals’ health and well-being needs, promoting patients healthy living, in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service
- Provide a wide range of support services to the smoking cessation team including:

- Assisting in the preparation of follow up calls list
- Accessing a number of computer systems to track patients progress and current status in treatment pathway
- Undertake data entry onto local and national databases and updating of spreadsheets
- Diary management and the arrangement of meetings where necessary
- Maintaining departmental stationery stock
- Dealing promptly with a wide range of enquiries from staff and patients

Communications and Relationships
- To communicate with people clearly in a manner and at a level of understanding appropriate to their abilities, preferences and beliefs
- To actively listen and respond to the needs of patients, relatives and carers
- To provide assistance to patients, relatives and carers, utilising persuasive skills, reassurance, tact and empathy as required
- To communicate information only to those people who have a right and a need to know, respecting confidentiality, in line with Trust policy and procedure

Analytical and Judgmental Skills
- To actively assess peoples’ health, safety and wellbeing whilst delivering personal care
- Recognise when there is a change in an individual’s health and well
- being, requiring referral to a senior member of staff

Planning and Organisational Skills
- To organise their own day to day duties
- To prioritise the care and enablement requirements for identified patients
- To assist in the organisation of work as required

Responsibility for Patient Care
- To correctly undertake tasks that have been delegated
- To record information accurately and pass it to the relevant people in the team in a timely manner
- To identify and report any changes that might affect the patient’s health and well-being or any possible risks that nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) may pose
- To obtain agreement from patient/carers before commencing any care related tasks
- To respect the individual’s privacy, dignity and beliefs.
