Boarding Staff

**Responsible to**:Head of Boarding
**Location**:Boarding Houses, Cambridge
**Role Description**:
SPF is an exceptional sixth-form college taking students typically aged between 15 and 19 who are ambitious about their university places and career. The college usually has about 30 nationalities, of which the largest by some margin is British. We aim to produce the best boarding environment available anywhere, to support successful study and in terms of quality of presentation and care.
The best possible experience of a boarding education is created by a stimulating and supportive environment: a home from home for boarders. The ethos of care, kindness and support is central to the way in which the college and the boarding houses run.
You will be part of a team providing supervision and support throughout term time and evenings, overnight and at weekends, although the overnight shifts do not require you to be awake all night.
**Main Responsibilities**:
The main responsibility of this role is acting in loco parentis and as such accepts responsibility for the health, welfare, pastoral care and safety of the students in the boarding house.
- To oversee the domestic aspects of boarding and assist with the supervision of boarders, ensuring high and consistent standards of care and welfare across boarding houses.
- To ensure that SPF boarding adheres to the highest expectations with regard to boarding standards and Inspection requirements and that boarding practice conforms to the SPF ethos in all respects.
- To supervise boarders, liaising with other staff to ensure that each student is provided with a comfortable, safe living environment and to oversee the state of repairs in the house.
- To ensure with other boarding staff and Estates Manager that student rooms are kept clean and tidy and that clothes and personal belongings are stored securely and tidily.
- To liaise with other boarding staff, Estates Manager and cleaners to ensure that the common areas of the house are kept clean and tidy.
- To conduct the evening check in and locking up of the house.
- To conduct the morning welfare and wake-up, and other checks during the day.
- To liaise with the matron to ensure pupils’ medical requirements are properly catered for and all medical protocols are followed and relevant documentation produced.
- To attend boarding meetings as required.
- To deal with disciplinary problems in a firm but caring manner, and to consult more senior colleagues in any matter of serious concern and to keep him/her well informed.
- In case of an emergency, ensure action is taken in line with college procedures.
- To attend appropriate training courses, as required.
Whilst ensuring the security of the boarding students and executing the daily routines are of paramount importance, it is also vital that boarding staff engage with students. This should be proactive rather than merely reactive - it is through this daily interaction that good relationships are formed with the boarding students and is, therefore, a key part of the role of boarding staff.
