General outpatient clinics to support infants and children with diagnosis of allergy, nutrition support, coeliac disease, obesity in under 2s and nutritional deficiencies. Home Enteral Feeding in infants and children with a range of conditions and complex needs. We manage 300 children with complex needs requiring tube feeding and this forms the majority of our workload.
These patients are managed both as inpatients and outpatients, in special schools, community and hospice care and allows for many opportunities for MDT working and experiencing a range of clinical settings to facilitate patient care. Specialist training - The role will allow opportunity to develop your knowledge and skills in specialist areas of paediatric dietetics with intensive support of the highly specialist dietitians working in these areas. These include: neonates, inborn errors of metabolism, cardiology and gastroenterology. Neonates: The Neonatal Unit at Bradford Royal Infirmary provides all levels of newborn medical care and intensive care to babies from Bradford and across the Yorkshire region.
Women may be referred during pregnancy when very early birth is anticipated, or babies transferred to Bradford for specialist care after delivery in their local hospital. About one baby in ten needs additional medical care in the newborn period, with about one in a 100 requiring intensive care. Nutrition is extremely important in the treating the very sick and preterm infant and our dietitians are a vital part of the MDT. The team supports infants from birth throughout their inpatient stay and through the first 2 years of life.
The dietitians support 8 neonatologists alongside AHP colleagues from SALT, physio and OT in outpatient clinics as well as neonatal outreach nurses. This is an extremely rewarding area of dietetics where our input really makes a difference. Inborn errors of metabolism: Within Bradford paediatric team there is a rare opportunity to develop your dietetic skills in the management of inborn errors of metabolism. The team in Bradford work alongside consultants from Manchester to deliver specialist care to over 500 patients living with metabolic conditions across Yorkshire and Humber.
Work involves supporting patients proactively with managing their condition through dietary treatment, and delivering care as patients grow and develop. As an experienced highly specialist dietetic team we are skilled in training DAPs and band 5 dietitians in the area of inborn errors in metabolism. Our training focuses on specific conditions and their management to allow junior team members to learn and feel safe and supported managing these patients. The team has implemented the use of a revolutionary new treatment for PKU in recent months and it is an exciting time to join the team.
**Gastroenterology**: Our dietetic team provide care to 70 children with IBD with Bradford having a diagnosis rate higher than the UK average. A quatre of all IBD diagnoses are made in those under 16 years and the most effective treatment consists of following an exclusive enteral diet for 6-8 weeks which dietitians are integral in supporting. The dietetic team provides rapid access to a highly skilled dietitian with expertise in specialised dietary treatments such as jejunal feeding, multiple food allergies with complex exclusion diets, severe malnutrition with risk of refeeding syndrome, exclusive enteral nutrition for Crohns disease and modular feeds. Additionally, we support 230 children with coeliac disease working in innovative ways to better support and engage these children and their families such as with the use of digital technology and group sessions.
**Cardiology**: Bradford dietitians work alongside LGI highly specialist dietitians to support infants awaiting and recently undergoing cardiac surgery for congenital cardiac abnormalities. This work involved intensive support to ensure increased nutritional requirements are met at a time when feeding can be challenging. These infants are often enterally fed to support them to meet their nutritional needs. This role works closely with the cardiology MDT which consists of consultant cardiologists in LGI, Bradford paediatricians, specialist cardiac nurses and childrens community nurses.
