We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Technical Specialist to join our dynamic Faculty Technical Operations team, which strives to provide a sector leading technical support for our students and staff.

Working within the area of ion accelerator science at the University’s centre for radiation science, the Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF), the Technical Specialist (DCF Accelerator Science) will primarily:

- have a day-to-day responsibility for the efficient and reliable operation of the ion accelerator systems at the Dalton Cumbrian Facility,
- process all internal and external sample requests and ensuring the timely output/reporting of high-quality data.
- ensure a reliable and compliant operation of all equipment of the unit, performing where necessary a preventative maintenance and repair, and assisting in the purchasing and installation of the new equipment.
- develop new analytical methods and procedures as the research needs arise, and implement standard operating procedures, performing experiments, and facilitate knowledge transfer to the staff and students of the faculty.
- We are seeking a Technical Specialist with a flexible approach to working within an agile organisation therefore the post holder will also be expected to support the wider technical team working across a variety of techniques and physical locations should the need arise.
- The post holder will on occasion be the responsible person in charge of safety outside of normal working hours.
- The role will routinely involve accessing and working in areas of restricted space, including designated confined spaces, working at height using appropriate working platforms and manual handling of equipment.

**Equipment & Operations**
- Ensuring that all internal and external requests are costed, logged, triaged and prioritised accordingly, and proactively engage with and update staff, students and external customers on the progress of experimental requests.
- Contribute to the calls for proposals, scheduling and delivery of experiments for staff, students and external customers, ensuring an efficient workflow is maintained.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of the experimental capability of the ion accelerator systems, including optimising and upgrading instrumentation, sample handling capabilities and end stations, and advising on and developing new capability.
- Maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting of the ion accelerators and associated instrumentation and infrastructure, including the induction, training and supervision of users.
- Contribute detailed professional scientific/engineering expertise through highly developed specialist knowledge and skills in a specific field.
- Provide high quality and reliable advice, guidance and training to a range of staff, students, visitors and external customers on your specific area of expertise in support of teaching, research and service provision.
- Provide specialist technical input and make recommendations that influence the direction of teaching and/or research operations in your area of specialism.
- Ensure that all experimental requests are delivered in a timely fashion and in line with service performance indicators.
- Develop strong and effective working relationships with colleagues across the University and at all levels of the organisations.
- Be responsible for the provision of an excellent service, proactively scan the wider environment for changes that may impact on delivery of service and use intelligence gathered to inform operation and planning processes.
- Manage a delegated budget.
- Take ownership for the continuous improvement in your own knowledge, experience and expertise, while freely sharing your knowledge and training others in your area(s) of expertise.
- Be responsive, agile and flexible based on service need across FSE i.e. learn new techniques, support other areas in the Faculty should the need arise, on occasions perform additional duties outside the scope of your role but commensurate with grade.
- Be an active and enthusiastic member of the FSE Technical Operations community.
- Champion a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, consistency and innovation; and actively engage with change initiatives, leading on specific activities as appropriate.
