**Job summary**:
Would you like to play an important role in influencing future infrastructure policy? Do you know how to distil complex information into the essential points for different audiences? The National Infrastructure Commission is looking for a Briefings and Engagement Officer to support our Commissioners and senior managers to get the most out of their stakeholder engagements.

**About the National Infrastructure Commission**

By joining the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC), you’ll be playing a key role in delivering independent advice to government on the UK’s long-term infrastructure needs. We do this to help support sustainable economic growth across the whole of the UK, improve competitiveness, support climate resilience and the transition to net zero carbon emissions, and ultimately improve the quality of life of UK citizens.

We are a collaborative team of civil servants and industry secondees working to support the Commissioners in offering forward-thinking recommendations based on a rigorous approach to evidence and consultation - and to monitor government’s progress in implementing those plans.

In fulfilling its purpose and objectives, the Commission:

- Sets a long term agenda - identifying the UK’s major economic infrastructure needs, and the pathways to address them,
- Develops fresh approaches and ideas - basing our independent policy recommendations on rigorous analysis, and
- Focuses on driving change - building consensus on our policy recommendations, and monitoring government progress on their delivery.

The Commission's core responsibilities include:

- Producing a National Infrastructure Assessment once every five years, setting out the Commission’s assessment of long-term infrastructure needs with recommendations to government on how to meet them;
- Carrying out in-depth studies into the UK’s most pressing infrastructure challenges, making recommendations to government, and
- Monitoring the government’s progress in delivering infrastructure projects and programmes recommended by the NIC.

We are a small, friendly organisation. We work to support the Commissioners to push for action on and endorse our recommendations and to monitor government’s progress in implementing them.

**Job description**:
This role is at the heart of the National Infrastructure Commission’s work to influence important government policy on net zero, climate resilience and to support regional economic growth.

You will work across the Secretariat at all levels and with Commissioners to ensure we are making the most of our stakeholder relationships. You will be encouraged to be proactive and share your ideas on how we can more effectively influence long term infrastructure policy.

The role sits within the Commission Secretariat’s Monitoring and Implementation Team, which is part of the Policy Group. The Secretariat is led by our Chief Executive, supported by a Senior Management Team, comprising the Chief Economist, Directors of Policy and Chief Operating Officer. The Commission is chaired by Sir John Armitt, with eight other Commissioners at present.

Responsibilities include:

- Coordinating and preparing briefing materials for the Chair, Commissioners and the Senior Management Team. For example: external meetings with Ministers and other senior stakeholders; Q&A sessions with senior guests at Commission meetings; and select committee appearances
- Monitoring developments in government policy and across parliament. For example: working closely with the Policy Team to understand how policy is progressing in government departments; monitoring relevant select committees and identifying opportunities for giving evidence; and monitoring relevant parliamentary debates
- Working with the Policy Team to identify key messages for senior stakeholder meetings and engagements
- Contributing own insight to advise the rest of the Monitoring and Implementation and Policy Team on opportunities for future engagement
- Supporting the Monitoring and Implementation Team on its wider work such as preparing letters for senior stakeholders; monitoring and updating the stakeholder database; and supporting events and engagements around the UK.

Essential skills and experience
- Ability to understand and distil complex information into succinct briefing material for senior colleagues
- Good written and spoken communication skills
- Ability to build good working relationships at all levels
- Good project management skills and ability to manage
