This is a great opportunity to join us as a key member of the department’s payroll team, you will lead on the complex and specialist areas of payroll processing.

**Job description**:
The role will support work on:
Payroll Processing

You’ll be involved in identifying and correcting potential issues with payroll results before the pay for our colleagues is finalised; this involves analysis of significant sized data sets and reviewing work undertaken by other members of the team to spot issues before they arise. You’ll also be involved in supporting us to meet our legislative obligations, including making sure everything is reported to HMRC and that the data our team process is accurately reflected in the department’s accounts, reconciling payroll transactions in line with departmental control guidelines.

Pensions Administration

After salary, pension is one of the biggest benefits of working at the Department for Education. You’ll play an important role in ensuring that all earnings and contribution data are submitted to our pension providers in accordance with accuracy and timeliness Service Level Agreements to ensure that everyone can be confident that their pension is correct.

Casework

It is our responsibility to make sure that not only are our colleagues are paid correctly but that they are supported and get a great service when they have questions about their pay.

In your role you’ll be supporting colleagues at all levels across the department with complex pay related casework - this is a real opportunity to communicate with and deliver a first-class service to those across the organisation who are responsible for children’s services and education, including early years, schools, higher and further education policy, apprenticeships and wider skills in England.

Project Work

You’ll know that payroll never stands still, we’ll be looking to you to support our endeavours to continuously improve our processes and manage the impacts of changes to legislation and internal policies on our processes, you’ll be given the opportunity to lead on projects that will mean our team can continue to deliver efficiently and effectively - whatever changes and challenges come our way.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Criteria**
- (Lead) Solid experience payroll administration in a medium sized organisation working with a range of stakeholders and providers.
- Experience of working with payroll providers and 3rd parties and sharing information.
- Detailed knowledge of Workday or other payroll systems.
- Strong organisational skills, and detail conscious.
- Good customer service focus, proactive and continuous improvement orientated.
- Good interpersonal skills able to deal with people at all levels.
- Strong system skills, particularly Excel

**Desirable Criteria**
- Knowledge of the Civil Service/government departments payroll related processes.
- Civil Service Pensions knowledge.

Desirable criteria will only be assessed in the event of a tie break situation to make an informed decision.
