The Department of Architecture is seeking 2 x Post-Doctoral Research Associates to join our Centre for Natural Material Innovation. The role-holders, as experts in Timber Products, Recycling, Construction & Life Cycle Assessment, will work on our Horizon Europe funded WOODCIRCLES research project. The aim of the project is to position the Urban Forest (existing building stock) as a mainstream source of recovered, carbon-neutral construction materials.

These are full-time, fixed-term roles within the department, with initial funding for 2 years in the first instance. The role is department based at 1-5 Scroope Terrace, Trumpington Street, Cambridge, with some flexibility for hybrid working.

Working within and liaising with a large interdisciplinary consortium of stakeholders - from materials producers to construction and digitalization experts to city partners - the role-holders will conduct research on the development of material-based solutions for increased recycling of materials currently bound in existing buildings and as well as develop design-based solutions to simplify future re-use and recycling of Urban Forest materials.

Specifically, the work-stream has two inter-related strands and it is anticipated that each post-doctoral research associate will focus on one of these:

- quantifying and qualifying the wood resources in the Urban Forest through data mapping activities at both European and local level in the partner cities of Rotterdam, Torino and Tartu
- the development of families of novel innovative, structural (e.g. like upcycled CLT or glulam) and insulation (e.g. downcycled wood fiber) materials with increased recycled content through an 'Urban Sawmill'.

It is an exciting time to join the Department, and the wider research community within the School of Arts and Humanities, and University, as we head towards REF 2028. A pro-active approach to hypothesis, experiment and theory, as well as sustainability more generally, will ensure that the workload is both exciting and fulfilling.

The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
