Speech & Language Therapy Assistant

This is an assistant post working in a small team to deliver a service for people with newly acquired aphasia post-stroke and their families. The post holder will assist the team in providing high quality education, training and advice to people with aphasia, their carers/families/friends. The post holder will assist the team in providing education to other clinicians in MSE stroke services. The post holder will participate in regular supervision and will demonstrate a commitment to learning the skills required to communicate effectively with people with aphasia.
The post holder will learn to adapt their communication to meet individual service users circumstances and needs particularly with regards to cultural and linguistic difference. The post holder will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining stocks of equipment. The post holder will maintain all high-tech communication aids, ensuring they are appropriately charged and ready for use. The post holder will organise and monitor the loaning of equipment to clients (as appropriate).
The post holder will (under the direction of SLT colleagues) make contact with patients, relatives, carers and other health professionals in the course of scheduling appointments, sharing information and making referrals etc. The post holder will encourage patients/clients and carers to adopt an active approach to regaining personal independence using empathy, sensitivity, and highly skilled interpersonal skills. The post holder will provide administrative support to team colleagues as required. The post holder must be personable and display good interpersonal skills.
The post holder must maintain a high standard of patient record keeping (under direction) and must maintain confidentiality at all times. The post holder must comply with organisational equal opportunities policy and treat staff, patients, colleagues and potential employees with dignity and respect at all times. The post holder will be required to work across the other teams in a variety of locations across the Mid and South Essex region, to work remotely at times and to work in Community peoples own homes on occasions. The ability to travel independently and time-efficiently across the region is a requirement of the position.
