Job overview

**Secondment Opportunity**

The Neurosurgery department is looking for a dynamic and experienced nurse to join the neurosurgical trauma team in delivering, developing and expanding the service for patients suffering from Neuro-Trauma and closely allied conditions. The post requires flexible working within the team to provide a high quality and responsive service. The post holder will work alongside the existing neuro-trauma team to undertake clinical assessment and make recommendations in line with agreed standards of care. Effective communication skills are essential in this role in order to assist in the effective co-ordination of the neurotrauma service including ward rounds, MDT’s and both inpatient and outpatient reviews.

Please note this is a secondment and support from your manager will be needed.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated health care professional to join the Neurosurgical team in shaping the future of Neuro-Trauma provision at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Applicants must have experience in the management of neurosurgical conditions including the assessment and management of Neuro-Trauma patients.

The role will involve the delivery of an effective transition from inpatient to early discharge, ensuring follow up and advice for ongoing care is provided. The post holder will be required to attend weekly Neuro-Trauma ward rounds, the Neuro-Trauma MDT and ensure timely follow-up and safety netting for recently discharged patients via telephone and face to face clinical assessments within the Neurosurgery Unit. In addition, it is envisaged the service will develop to provide advice and assessment to outlying patients and teaching to staff within NUH and the referring hospitals.

Applicants should be registered with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or equivalent.

Working for our organisation

The Neurosurgical Unit at NUH is a busy Tertiary Centre accepting referrals from across the East Midlands. The neurotrauma service is a new innovation and since it's inception has rapidly grown and made significant improvements for patients who have suffered neuro trauma. We are looking for an innovative and caring individual to be involved in continuing the development of our service into the future.

Although this post is initially offered as a part time secondment, ongoing work is already underway to grow the neurotrauma service and we anticipate that a permanent full time role will be approved.

Although working patterns will be negotiable and flexible, availability on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays will be required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will work alongside the existing post-holder and Neurosurgical team to undertake clinical assessment and make recommendations in line with agreed standards of care. In addition the post holder will be responsible for delivering the care pathway for patients suffering from Neuro-Trauma and other conditions such as non aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhages and it is envisaged the service will develop to provide advice and assessment to outlying patients and teaching to staff within NUH and the referring hospitals.

The post holder will be expected to participate in neurotrauma audit, presenting findings locally and beyond, help in clinical trials in the specialism and help to develop research activities by the team.
