This is a new opportunity for an experienced Orthoptist to join our eye care team in a busy, supportive department based at Queen’s Medical Centre campus. The department is forward thinking, progressive and has a great reputation for student clinical placements, including use of Hololens technology to support

The Orthoptic department has a varied caseload, the post holder will participate in paediatric and adult ocular motility clinics, including virtual paeds clinics, the assessment of patients referred from eye casualty. The department is a clinical placement centre for orthoptic undergraduates, optometrists, medical students, post graduate medics and other health professionals and the post holder would be expected to contribute to this clinical teaching role.

The othoptic department has an established preceptorship/clinical supervision programme for new staff to the team.

A Diploma/Degree in Orthoptics plus HcPC registration is required and experience as a clinical tutor would be advantageous.

Main duties of the job

Participate in the of delivery care across all elements of the service including paediatric and adult orthoptics, new patient orthoptic/optometry clinics, paediatric ophthalmology, adult squint and neuro-ophthalmology.

Provide orthoptic expertise for patients referred from eye casualty and from other specialities such as maxillofacial, neurology, stroke, paediatrics.

Work flexibly to support the needs of the service, this may include supporting the visual fields service and training for additional roles

Demonstrate a good team working ethic in delivering holistic patient care.

Use time management and organisational skills to ensure smooth running of the individual clinics and wider service.

Provide a high standard of clinical teaching to a wide range of healthcare professionals

Demonstrate the skills of reflective practise and ensure key learning is shared and CPD is achieved.

Participate in self -audit and contribute to departmental audit and research.

Working for our organisation

Ophthalmology Services include eye casualty, day case, in-patient and outpatient facilities. It has strong links to the University of Nottingham through research and works closely with the regional Diabetic Eye Screening Service. We have a large team of Consultant Ophthalmologists, who provide outpatient and surgical services in a full range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Specialist Orthoptist, maintain the delivery of a high standard of clinical work within all aspects of the orthoptic practise and clinical teaching.

Work as an autonomous practitioner in undertaking orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management of patients of all ages, ranging from pre-term babies to the elderly and who have various communication abilities and who have been referred from a variety of sources.

Take responsibility for an individual caseload of orthoptic patients with complex presentation and needs and provide specialist advice to other health professionals regarding patient management

Participate in the theoretical and clinical teaching of orthoptics to orthoptic undergraduates on placement to the department

Participate in the theoretical and clinical teaching of orthoptics to medical students, ophthalmic nurses, optometrists and other health professionals visiting the orthoptic department each week.

Maintain and enhance professional knowledge and skills required to practise as an orthoptist and keep a personal professional development portfolio.

To participate in departmental audit and research projects

Ensure compliance with infection control procedures.

Ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework.

Essential criteria
- Diploma/degree in Orthoptics
- HPC registration

Desirable criteria
- Additional awards
- BIOS recognised teaching course/qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
- Evidence of CPD and ongoing competence to practice
- Clinical audit and research
- Recent clinical experience as an autonomous practitioner
- Theoretical and clinical teaching of Orthoptics to health professionals

Desirable criteria
- Use of teaching aids
- Formal Presentations
- Clinical teaching of Orthoptic undergraduates

Other requirements

Essential criteria
- Able to work various shifts including weekdays, weekends, bank holiday days and varying hours between 7.00am and 8.00pm to support the service as required.
