**Purpose of role**

Working within large, modern offices in Wolverhampton or Derby, our Technical Authoring team is dedicated to producing Alstom UK’s maintenance manuals.

As our Technical Author, you’ll sit within the Technical Publications Team which is part of the larger Maintenance Solutions and Development Team with approx. 25 employees. Covering Maintenance Optimisation and Development, Innovations and Integration, Life Cycle Costs and Technical Publications.
This role is to amend, create and issue maintenance documentation for various fleets of trains and trams currently in service in the UK using various software packages and document formatting/templates.

This is a great opportunity to work on different fleets which will keep the work varied and interesting and your role will be essential to the safe running of these fleets.

**What are my key responsibilities?**

As a technical author we need someone who can:

- Produce clear and concise technical documentation in the form of specifications, test procedures, maintenance, and safety instructions. Seeing all documents through to completion and issue.
- Liaise with relevant train operating companies, engineers, maintenance development engineers, traincare staff and parts department to gather the information and data required for your technical documents.
- Ensure all Work Instructions, Risk assessments, and, Maintenance and Safety Bulletins are produced to the relevant standard in a timely manner.
- Produce and update MS Word templates, HTML documents and Xml templates for Work Instructions, Check Lists, Maintenance and Safety Bulletins and Risk Assessments.
- Arrange and carrying out validation of tasks.
- Flexibility to move from fleet to fleet easily using different software and templates and to move from one package of work to another as required.

**What do I need to qualify for this job?**

To add value to this role you will need to be technically astute with a technical background in one of the following - engineering, maintenance, vehicle, mechanical or electrical. And have the ability to translate modification documents and engineering drawings. You’ll need to be good at building relationships, available to commit to some travel around the UK and have outstanding PC skills.

**Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience**
- HNC in an engineering discipline or above OR relevant experience
- Ability to produce clear technical documentation
- Ability to manipulate images using Adobe Photoshop or similar graphics program
- Proficient in the use of MS Word, Framemaker and MS Excel.

**Desirable Requirements**
- Experience of train maintenance or build
- Ability to write VBA code
