Medical Examiner
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of Whittington Health Medical Examiner service. Based at the acute site, our 7 Medical Examiners (ME) are responsible for scrutinising all Islington deaths under the guidance of the Lead Medical Examiner and supported by two Medical Examiner Officers (MEO).
The service acts to streamline the process of providing bereaved families with an explanation and opportunity to discuss the death certificate (MCCD) and advising clinical teams. MEs will identify concerns raised by both staff and the bereaved about individual cases and identify themes arising from these. You will work closely with the Learning from Deaths system (including the Associate Medical Director) and existing clinical governance systems as well as the coronial system and registrars.
This role is for 0.5 PA. We work a rota system and so you will cover sessions on a Monday between 2-4 hours in length to total approximately 8 hours every month.
We are also piloting an extended hours service for urgent cases on the weekend and bank holiday, which we would like you to be part of the 1:7 rota. This requires you to be available between 7.30-9.30am on days you are on-call to process any urgent cases.
**Proposed interview date**: 19th December between 2-4pm
Please see the full Job Description and the Person Specification for further details about the job role.
Whittington Health serves a richly diverse population and works hard to ensure that all our services are fair and equally accessible to everyone. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the way we look after our staff. We aim to employ a workforce which is as representative as possible of this population, so we are open to the value of differences in age, disability, gender, marital status, pregnancy and maternity, race, sexual orientation, and religion or belief. The Trust believes that as a public sector organisation we have an obligation to have recruitment, training, promotion and other formal employment policies and procedures that are sensitive to these differences. We think that by doing so, we are better able to treat our patients as well as being a better place to work.
**Summary of Key Responsibilities**:
This does not represent an exhaustive or prioritised list of responsibilities but is an outline framework; the job profile and areas of responsibility may change in line with the needs of the Trust and the particular skill of the post holder.
- To ensure compliance with the legal and procedural requirements associated with the current and proposed reformed processes of certification, investigation by coroners and registration of deaths (adults, children and live born babies).
- To scrutinise the certified causes of death offered by attending doctors in a way that is proportionate, consistent and compliant with the proposed national protocol.
- To discuss and explain the cause of death with next of kin/informants in a transparent, tactful and sympathetic manner. It is anticipated that such discussions will be predominately conducted through telephone conversations but may be in person.
- To ensure that all deaths judged to require structured judgement review are informed to the learning from deaths process to ensure safety and learning.
- To ensure that all staff and public users of the ME system are treated with respect and are not discriminated against on the grounds of sex, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender reassignment or disability.
- To maintain comprehensive records of all deaths scrutinised and undertake analysis to provide information to the National Medical Examiner’s office.
- To refer any concerns raised during the scrutiny to the appropriate clinical governance or mortality review process including individual and service level concerns raised by staff (within or external to the Trust), carers, families or other agencies involved in care prior to death. To be aware of common themes and raise these with the appropriate Trust services in conjunction with the lead Medical Examiner.
- To support the training of all clinicians in their understanding of death certification and promote good practice in accurate completion of MCCDs.
- To work closely with the Medical Examiner team (including the Lead ME, other medical examiners, medical examiner officers (MEOs)), sharing experience and expertise to support peer learning and set uniform standards of service delivery.
- To work collaboratively with key stakeholders including the Trust mortuary service, Mortality and governance teams, clinical teams, the coronial and council registration services, bereaved families and agencies providing care outside the Trust (eg Social services).
- To work with faith group leaders to ensure that faith and cultural requests and needs are achieved in a timely manner.
