**Job summary**:

- It is vital the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is able to provide high-quality quantitative analysis to inform decisions on competition cases and protect both consumers and businesses. In order to meet this challenge, we are seeking a skilled
- **Assistant Director of Econometrics** to lead on the design and delivery of econometric analysis in competition cases. As the UK has left the EU, our role has become even more important as the diversity, number, and complexity of the cases we work on has increased, presenting exciting opportunities for accomplished economists to further strengthen our capability in this critical field. The scope of our work is also increasing as the CMA becomes responsible for the Office for the Internal Market and is extending its scrutiny of digital markets.**Job description**:
As **Assistant Director of Econometrics**, you will work in a collaborative, collegiate atmosphere to manage econometric input into a diverse case load. This includes investigations into mergers and markets, competition and consumer enforcement cases, and regulatory appeals. Leading the econometric work on one or several cases, you will assure the quality of analysis, manage econometric risks on projects, and review econometric analysis submitted by other parties and their advisors. You will also explain the analysis to non-economist decision makers and make sure that their decisions can rely on insights from quantitative analysis.

A key aspect of the role is the ability to deliver through others, by providing constructive feedback on work produced by colleagues and by developing the abilities of CMA economists both inside and outside the Econometrics Team. You will also contribute to the development of the CMA’s econometrics and wider quantitative capabilities (alongside CMA’s DaTA Unit), and to contribute to the development of a team of nearly 100 economists.

In return the CMA is a hugely diverse, rewarding and stimulating place to work - an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so. We offer generous benefits, which you can review in full below.

**Person specification**:
Your detailed responsibilities:

- Reporting to the Director of Econometrics, the appointee will be responsible for the econometric input into decisions on CMA cases. This will involve influencing the strategic direction of the project, in particular determining the key areas for investigation and any quantitative analysis required to assess them, deciding what quantitative evidence should be gathered and how, identifying and discussing with decision maker(s) on the project how the econometric analysis contributes to the overall assessment / approach to be taken.
- To be primarily responsible for ensuring that econometric work on the project is delivered on time and to a high standard. This includes critically assessing and interpreting the evidence available and the weight that can be attached to it, identifying econometric risks and mitigations for them, presenting the team’s analysis both orally and in writing (e.g. drafting working papers on econometrics and sections of published reports dealing with econometrics).
- To be responsible for managing the delivery of econometric analysis on the project, including ensuring that a detailed specification of the quantitative analysis to be undertaken is provided, that the team has the resources it needs and makes efficient use of them, that timetables for delivery are agreed and met; and to ensure that the CMA’s Director of Econometrics and Directors of Economics are kept abreast of relevant analysis and their attention is drawn to matters which they would want to be informed on.
- To play a pivotal role in communicating the econometrics work on projects to the project team, both across the CMA (including senior management) and external stakeholders (including parties to the investigation/inquiry, government departments and consumer groups). To establish relationships of influence with both internal and external stakeholders and represent the CMA externally.
- To have direct staff management responsibility for several Econometrics Advisers (three at present); including supervising their work, providing opportunities for staff to develop their skills, and coaching them and providing constructive feedback. To build the econometrics and wider data capabilities of economists both inside and outside the Econometrics Team and to encourage appreciative demand
