**Summary of Job Purpose**:
The Senior Carer role is a temporary role enabling Care Assistants to train for and take on a Team Leader role in the future. Senior Carers have two years to complete the necessary training and either become Team Leaders or revert to their Care Assistant role.

Senior Carers provide and supervise the delivery of high standards of care to Residents in accordance with current evidence-based professional practice and within Porthaven policies, Care Quality Commission standards and regulations, and current legislation.

**Please note shifts will be 7 - 7, Days or Nights.**

**Key Duties and Responsibilities**:
**Personal Development**

Senior Carers must:

- lead by example in their training compliance, conduct and behavior
- enroll and participate in training programmes that enable them to take on the Team Leader role in the future
- be trained and competent in medication administration and handling
- have adequate communication and recording skills enabling them to lead and organise their teams.

**Care Standards and Quality Assurance**
- provide coaching and guidance to the care team
- participate in the review, recording and updating of Care Plans when required
- act as a Key Worker, where assigned, and participate in Resident review meetings
- support Residents with washing, using the toilet, dressing, undressing, and all other aspects of daily living
- take part in social activities and to support and encourage Residents to continue with hobbies and activities in and outside the Home
- assist with serving food and drinks to Residents and supporting Residents who need assistance during mealtimes, safeguarding Residents with swallowing difficulties
- assist in the delivery of care for Resident who are dying or who have a progressive illness
- respond to Residents and visitors in a prompt, professional and appropriate manner
- carry out regular night checks as part of a waking night shift determined by the Care Plan
- undertake moving and handling of Residents and loads using specialist equipment
- ensure the Home and Residents’ rooms are kept clean and tidy including making and changing the bed linen
- ensure individual aids and equipment used by Residents are maintained e.g. wheelchairs, hearing aids, spectacles and dentures, etc.
- support Residents in travelling to and from the Home e.g. on social outings and where necessary on hospital visits etc.
- ensure that all information regarding Residents and the organisation is not divulged to third parties without approval.

**Customer Care**
- communicate effectively with Residents, their relatives, friends, other staff and external visitors to the Home and deal sensitively with their concerns
- always show courtesy and respect to Residents to ensure that they enjoy the highest quality of life, respect the confidentiality of Residents and their families and friends at all times, and involve families and friends in the Resident’s care and develop their trust
- greet all visitors, and answer the telephone, in a friendly, courteous, and efficient manner and positively promote Porthaven Care Homes in general, and the Home in particular, positively in the local community at all times
- ensure professional knowledge and job skills are current to ensure that our Residents receive the best possible standards of care and service.

**People Management**
- assist with the induction of new care staff, and the training and development of existing care staff
- efficiently co-ordinate the duties of all junior care staff, whilst ensuring that they are properly supported and supervised
- assist in evaluating staff performance on induction and post induction
- attend and participate in training sessions and staff meetings
- maintain good working relations with colleagues at all times.

**Generic Core Duties**
- positively promote the Home through personal conduct both within and outside working hours
- ensure that you have read and understood all relevant Porthaven policies and procedures and that you comply with these at all times
- maintain good working relationships with all colleagues at all times
- respond to any other reasonable instruction from a Registered Nurse or a Team Leader, which is within your area of competence.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Part-time
Part-time hours: 12-48 per week

**Salary**: £11.20 per hour
