Overall Purpose
The National Space Academy provides education programmes, continuing professional development sessions (CPD) and careers events, designed to support schools’ curricula in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) using space as the inspirational context. This ground-breaking initiative combines world class expertise in space science and climate science at leading universities and companies in the UK with a network of outstanding teachers to provide engaging and effective STEM interventions nationally and internationally.
The National Space Academy has received a grant to deliver a programme of free intensive and interactive activities within the UK Space Agency’s ‘Space to Learn’ project. A National Space Academy Regional Project officer is sought to join the team during maternity cover period.
The Regional Project officer will manage the project’s activities within their region; Scotland and N. Ireland, as well as support the existing Regional Project Officers in their regions. This role includes recruiting schools onto masterclasses and managing the delivery of space camps and careers events.
Contract
**Maternity Cover, fixed-term. 13th May 2024 - 10th of January 2025.**
Hours
35 hours per week. These will normally be from Monday to Friday but there will be a requirement for some evening, weekend and bank holiday work according to the needs of the team. During weeks where Space Camps take place, the working hours for the week will be increased and time off in lieu will be granted accordingly.
There will be an annual symposium event on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of April that you are welcome to attend.
**Responsibilities**:
To manage and administer the various deliverables of the Space to Learn project in their region. It should be noted that all activities being marketed are free to the schools/students.
- To organise, facilitate and book masterclasses to targets specified in the project
- To manage the delivery of non-residential space camps
- To manage the delivery several 1-day careers conferences
- To support the other Regional Project Officers leading up to, and at their Space Camps and Careers Conferences
- To maintain a database of secondary level schools within the region
- To support the evaluation of the project
- Work with the Programme and Network Manager to coordinate a network of teachers seconded to the project within the region
- Continue and development relationships with schools and FE colleges in the region
- Create a relationship and work closely with regional staff from our project partners; JET (Jon Egging Trust)
- Liaise with partners (STFC, SA Catapult, UK Space Agency, ESA and industry and academic partners) and other relevant contacts
- To visit their region on a regular basis and to arrange travel, and accommodation as required
- Ensure that the correct budgetary, financial, and quality procedures are adhered to
- Ensure that the National Space Academy marketing enjoys a high profile in the education and science communities and that the teams employ the best methods of communicating with the target audiences within the region
- To ensure the project is delivered to a high standard
- To provide website content to the Marketing and Communications Manager for news stories on the website.
- To be familiar and work within the National Space Centre operational and health and safety procedures, as appropriate
- Be familiar with National Space Centre operational and administrative procedures to ensure that customer care and other staff are not compromised
- Undertaking training and development as part of the Personal Development Programme

- The ability to act as an ambassador for the National Space Academy project at all times, building professional relationships with partner organisations, stakeholders and colleagues

- Interest in space science, climate change observation and the opportunity for growth for the UK civil space sector

- A sensitivity to the needs of and restrictions on those working within formal education
