Sheffield, United Kingdom University of Sheffield Full time

We have an exciting opportunity available for an enthusiastic Post-Doctoral Research Associated to join the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre.

The Sheffield NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) is a £12m five-year award that supports experimental and translational research in four themes; Neuroscience (led by Professor Chris McDermott), Imaging and Engineering (led by Professor Jim Wild), Cardiovascular Disease (led by Professor Rob Storey) and Infection & Immunity (led by Professor Sarah Rowland-Jones).

A large number of investigators work on a diverse range of projects within the BRC. The aim of the core BRC funding is to pump-prime projects that achieve the specific objectives of the BRC themes and that leverage further external funding from UKRI, charities, industry and other sources.

This post will be jointly line-managed by the Neuroscience BRC Theme and the Sensors and Wearables subtheme (led by Dr Vita Lanfranchi and Professor Tim Chico) of the Imaging and Engineering BRC theme. It will support a wide range of projects at various stages, which will be prioritised by the BRC theme leads.

**The Imaging and Engineering theme is based in INSIGNEO**: the Institute for In Silico Medicine, Europe’s largest such institute that applies computational modeling and engineering approaches to Medicine. INSIGNEO hosts the South Yorkshire Digital Health Hub (led by Professor Tim Chico and based in the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University), which will develop and commercialize digital health innovations that address unmet clinical needs in the region and beyond.

The role will involve leading and managing projects which meet the research deliverables of the NIHR Sheffield BRC. This will include supporting and overseeing recruitment and data collection for a multidisciplinary portfolio of studies within the BRC. In this role you will plan and implement data analysis of datasets collected within clinic-based and real-world scenarios within NHS settings, including signal processing and statistical analysis, and interpretation of research findings.

You will be able to contribute to the supervision of PhD and undergraduate students in the research group and actively participate in ongoing international collaborations with other academic and industrial research partners.
In this flexible and dynamic role, you will generate highly impactful research at the interface between research and clinical translation.

A proven track record of high-quality scientific publications and demonstrated evidence in working in a multi-disciplinary team is essential. Previous experience in assisting the supervision of PhD students and technical staff is desirable.

The role will develop technologies that obtain passively sensed (such as heart rate and mobility) and active (user-generated) data (such as symptom scores), pilot these technologies in clinical studies in a range of medical conditions, and develop the analytics required to improve diagnosis, treatment personalisation, and risk prediction.

We are committed to enabling our employees to work in a hybrid model with flexibility over when, where and how to achieve the required outputs, in discussion with your manager. We are committed to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit the individual and University.

We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles from across the world, whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
