London, United Kingdom Amnesty International Full time

**Do you have experience conducting research on the climate crisis? Do you want to use your research expertise to support our mission for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all?**

**JOB PURPOSE**

**ABOUT YOU**

As an experienced researcher, you will have extensive knowledge of climate justice and human rights, with the ability to produce clear and persuasive research documents, policy positions and strategy papers that reflect your understanding of human rights principles and Amnesty's core values. You will have excellent political judgement and strong analytical skills, as well as outstanding written and verbal English. Fluency in another language, particularly Spanish, French or Arabic, is desirable.

**MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Develop and conduct research and analysis on human rights and the climate crisis in order to provide timely, accurate, independent and impartial assessments and recommendations to the IS and the wider movement, with a particular focus on harmful government policies and company operations; global and local human rights impacts of fossil fuels and a just and human rights-consistent transition to zero-carbon economies.
- Develop expert knowledge and provide expert advice within the organisation on issues within the post's thematic brief, in particular a just and human rights-consistent transition to zero-carbon economies. This will include carrying out analysis for advocacy and campaigning of priority national/regional energy-related and just transition laws and policies, advising on national and cross-national campaigns, taking active part in relevant civil society coalitions and engaging in advocacy at national and international level.
- Write or contribute to the drafting of timely and effective reports, briefings, position papers, correspondence, action materials, press releases, and other internal and external documents in order to implement AI's agreed strategies.
- Organize and undertake field research trips, leading specifically on information-gathering, fact-finding, analysis and assessment of relevant human rights concerns, including in response to crisis situations; prepare, where necessary, security assessments, political and other briefings related to the mission for IS management, mission participants and internal or external stakeholders; and represent AI in the field, including to government officials, partner organizations and the media.
- Develop and coordinate the implementation of specific advocacy initiatives, contribute to campaigning strategies, and manage specific sub-projects within the framework of agreed strategies for the unit, the IS and the movement. This may include coordination of project teams and supervision of consultants.

**SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE**
- Specialist knowledge of and extensive professional experience in the thematic area in your brief, namely climate justice with a particular focus on human rights-consistent transition to zero-carbon economies, human rights impacts of fossil fuels and an understanding of the nature of key human rights concerns, as well as the relevant political, social, legal, economic, cultural, ethnic, racial and gender issues;
- Knowledge of both the climate justice and the human rights field, including key actors, debates, and processes;
- Expert knowledge of the international human rights legal framework, particularly with respect to climate change and, ideally economic, social and cultural rights, and relevant developments, gained through significant experience working within or on the sector;
- Experience of interviewing and dealing in an appropriate manner with witnesses and survivors of human rights violations, as well as with senior government officials, policy makers, and law enforcement officials;
- Outstanding written and verbal English is essential; in addition, the ability to work to a high professional level in another widely-used language, particularly Spanish, French or Arabic, will be an advantage.

**Please see the attached job description for more information on responsibilities, skills and experience required.**
