Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner

The Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) role is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions, working across both educational settings and healthcare sectors. This training programme is part of a national transformation programme, a shared initiative between the Department for Education and NHS England that supports the government’s priority to increase access of mental health and well-being support for children and young people.
The programme is delivered through a combination of taught days with Anna Freud and UCL, independent self-guided study days, and practical experience gained in education wellbeing and mainstream mental health services. All applicants must be prepared to travel to UCL for face-to-face sessions in your training year. The university course requires 100% attendance rate.
The applicant will be required to work within educational settings with young people, parents and school staff and from NELFT bases. The role requires the applicant to travel around the locality areas effectively.
The delivery of the programme will be provided through a combination of taught days within the university and independent self-guided study days.
A Trainee EMHP will be expected to work under supervision as part of a mental health team in a creative environment where evidence-based interventions, new ideas, ways of working and supporting children and young people (CYP) are actively encouraged. This approach requires flexibility and adaptability, and a passion for working with CYP in educational settings. Over the course of the training year, the post-holder will, develop knowledge and practice skills to employ a range of evidence-based interventions for common mental health problems young people, and their parents, in line with the university expectations.
Following successful completion of the training course and registration with either the British Psychological Society (BPS) or the British Association for Behavioural Cognitive Practitioners (BABCP) you will they offered a permanent AfC Band 5 EMHP contract (job description attached).
You will be based in schools and deliver evidence-based interventions to children, young people, and their parents/carers. You will offering evidence based interventions for low to moderate mental health presentations. The MHST work with the school staff to support a ‘whole school approach’ to mental health and positive well-being.
Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.
Annual Leave
Due to service needs annual leave will predominately need to be taken within school/university holiday periods. A maximum of a working week can be considered within term time following line management discussion and agreement.
Probationary Period
High Cost Area Supplement
The South West area (Basildon and Thurrock) attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 5% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £1,192 and a maximum payment of £2,011).
(per annum pro rata).
**The Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner role will**:
Work closely as part of a team of mental health professionals delivering a wide range of evidence informed interventions, under clinical supervision (e.g., guided self-help and parenting interventions)
Develop and practice evidence-based skills under clinical supervision to carry out holistic and child-centred mental health assessments, including risk assessments.
Develop and practice evidence-based skills under clinical supervision to work directly with children, young people and families.
Develop and practice identification of safeguarding concerns, risk management and effective care planning.
The Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner is required to:
Have experience of working with children, young people and their families
Have experience of working and liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders
Have experience of working with children and young people who have social, emotional and/or mental health difficulties
