This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of the Weston Park Cancer Centre, leading our ward clerk team and overseeing the booking of admissions for elective patients.

The role is a patient focussed role delivered in clinical areas in Weston Park Cancer Centre. The team work in a fast paced environment where empathy and dedication to patient care is paramount.

The role will involve leading the ward clerk team to ensure all inpatient wards within Weston Park Cancer Centre provide a comprehensive administrative service to support the nursing teams and wider MDT. You will train and support your team in partnership with clinical and administrative teams to provide a joined-up service for patients. You will assist the Service Coordinator in the introduction and development of comprehensive training for new employees, and to act as a mentor during new employees’ training periods.

You will be responsible for rota management to ensure appropriate cover for Ward 2, Ward 3, WAU and Teenage Cancer Unit.

You will undertake line management duties such as appraisals, sickness meetings and work closely with the Service Coordinator regarding disciplinary issues.

You will be the first point of contact for booking all admissions, using the ICE referral system and ensuring that these are in the electronic admissions diary. You will be expected to work with the wider MDT to ensure all admissions are booked accurately and processed within a timely manner.

You will ensure your team always maintains a high level of data quality and accuracy. You will assist in data quality checks, working with the Service Coordinator to escalate discrepancies. Furthermore, you will ensure a single of contact for all inpatient queries and continually look for opportunities to improve the quality of the ward clerk service and patient experience.

The Weston Park Cancer Centre is the leading Cancer Centre in the North East of England, with its clinicians providing a non-surgical oncology service to the populations of Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. As well as patients from further afield.

The growth in cancer diagnosis, combined with medical advances increasing the length of time people are living with and beyond cancer, means demands for services are growing. The ward clerk team lie at the heart of the treatment pathway supporting the clinical team by providing effective and efficient administrative support to help the patient receive the best care possible.

The admin and clerical service at Weston Park is currently undergoing a cycle of improvement meaning as well as leading a service that supports patients at their most vulnerable, you can also contribute to innovations underway and bring your ideas and innovations to the creative improvement space.
