Job description

The uplands of Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the Penwith Moors contain large expanses of semi-natural habitat including extensive areas of peatland, both blanket bog and valley moors, upland heathland, acidic grassland, purple moor grass pastures, upland oak woods, and wetland. The landscape qualities of these upland areas are reflected in their designation as either National Park or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). They are rich in archaeology and much-valued as places for nature-based recreation. They are also living landscapes with a history of farming and commoning. The rich wildlife found in these upland areas is the result of generations of low-intensity farming activity combined with naturally occurring habitats and species. The continuation of extensive farming that balances the needs of nature and the other eco-system services our upland areas provide will be key to delivering nature recovery over the longer term.

This role will provide strategic leadership and support across the upland areas in Devon and Cornwall, which are critical parts of the Nature Recovery Network locally. The role will focus on providing strategic and technical direction to the team, our partners and customers with the aim of delivering ambitious nature recovery on Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the Penwith Moors. To achieve this ambition, the role will require you to effectively engage with our partners and customers to improve the condition of designated sites and deliver peatland restoration across wide upland landscapes. This role will require you to identify and build on the synergies created by bringing together multiple strands of our place-based delivery on Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the Penwith Moors and advise the team on our approach to achieving complimentary objectives that deliver more for people and nature across our uplands.

**Key tasks and accountabilities**:

- To bring and use skills and knowledge of upland habitats and farming systems, particularly the farming of moorland commons, to deliver nature recovery at a landscape scale, including bringing sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs) into favourable condition and peatland restoration.
- To support the team in the direct delivery of nature recovery, helping them find practical and long-lasting solutions to complex and contentious upland farming issues. You will do this by sharing your knowledge of relevant uplands species / habitats or grazing knowledge.
- To engage at a strategic level with partners and land managers to drive a shift towards nature recovery using existing mechanisms such as agri-environment schemes, SSSI regulation, advice and grants.
- To work closely with Managers, Team Leaders, Lead Advisers, our complex case unit, legal and enforcement teams in finding solutions to complex and contentious cases. You will lead on the provision of technical and strategic advice to help the team and Natural England in making the right decisions on delivering nature recovery in our uplands.
