**Job summary**:
**About the Office for Budget Responsibility**

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) was established by the Chancellor in May 2010. We provide official independent forecasts of the economy and public finances to inform the Government's fiscal policy decisions, examine the impact of the Government's policy decisions on the public finances, and assess the prospects for achieving the Government's fiscal targets and welfare cap. We publish reports on long-term fiscal sustainability, fiscal risks, and trends in welfare spending, and run a wider work programme of research and analysis into economic and fiscal issues.

The OBR is comprised of the Budget Responsibility Committee (BRC) - Richard Hughes (Chairman), Professor David Miles, and Andy King - who are currently supported by around 45 civil servants, including economists, public finance analysts, and business support staff.

As we are a small team with a flat structure, all roles offer direct exposure to senior staff and the opportunities to manage relationships with stakeholders across government and to project manage work programmes. You would get the chance to work flexibly across a range of high-profile issues, responding to policy developments and other demands. At times, this would involve working with experts to analyse technical issues, such as changes to tax or spending policy. A role here also provides a great opportunity to develop your ability to communicate your insights concisely to non-experts - for instance, by authoring sections of published reports.

**Job description**:
**About the team**

We are recruiting an assistant economist to work in our economy team. The team’s work includes producing the OBR’s economic forecast, associated analysis, and the economy chapter of the twice-yearly _Economic and fiscal outlook (EFO)_. Outside the forecast, staff are engaged across the OBR’s analytical and research agenda, including working papers and model development. They also contribute extensively to the OBR’s other key publications, including the _Forecast evaluation report _and the _Fiscal risks and sustainability report_.

The role will involve a significant amount of high-profile responsibilities, contributing to the OBR’s economic forecasts and analytical work program and engaging extensively with the OBR’s Budget Responsibility Committee. The post will offer scope to independently produce analysis, as well as to collaborate with others in the team and across the OBR.

**Key accountabilities**
- Leading on specific parts of the economy forecast. Responsibilities currently covered by assistant economists in the team include prospects for credit conditions, parts of the housing market forecast, the output gap and the outlook for inflation. This involves producing forecast numbers, presenting analysis to the Budget Responsibility Committee, and co-authoring relevant sections of the _Economic and fiscal outlook_.
- Undertaking bespoke pieces of economic analysis to inform key forecast judgements. Past analysis within the team has included analysis of the ongoing impact of Brexit and the pandemic’s long-term impact on behavioural change and the structure of the economy.
- Contributing to the maintenance and development of our forecasting infrastructure and economic models used for wider analysis.
- The role also offers the opportunity to contribute to OBR’s wider analytical programme and publications such as working papers, the _Forecast evaluation report _and the _Fiscal risks and sustainability report_.
