Position type: Full time, fixed term for 24 months with the potential for extension
Location: Hammersmith Hospital, London
Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and experience health economist to join the team at the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) within the Biomedical Engineering Theme. Biomedical Engineering exemplifies convergence science, spanning all stages of patient health from early diagnosis to clinical intervention, follow-up monitoring, and rehabilitation.
The Biomedical Engineering Theme is positioned at the interface between engineering innovations and clinical practice to drive the translation of original research, enhancing the efficiency, accuracy, and reach of healthcare technologies and devices. The Theme aims to enable less invasive, more cost-effective, and more equitable healthcare, ultimately realizing currently unavailable procedures and therapies.
Reporting to the BRC Biomedical Engineering Theme co-leads (Professor Anthony Bull and Professor George Hanna) and the Theme Manager (Dr Bohwon Kim), the Health Economist role is a full-time appointment to assess the cost-effectiveness of technologies developed within the Theme, analysing healthcare data and policies, and providing economic insights for projects within the Biomedical Engineering Theme portfolio.
The Health Economist will (i) perform a literature review of the existing clinical and health economic evidence, (ii) map pathways for embedding newly developed technologies and devices in clinical settings, and (iii) conduct appropriate health economic evaluations of specific medical devices and in vitro diagnostics to support translational research from bench to bedside.
The role will closely collaborate with colleagues at the NIHR Healthtech Research Centre in In-Vitro Diagnostics (HRC), which has a strong focus on in vitro diagnostics, especially point-of-care diagnostics.

The primary responsibility of this position is to evaluate all project profiles within the BRC Bioengineering Theme, focusing on health economics and health technology assessment.
