The Department of Psychology is seeking a Research Associate. About the role
The aim of the project is to examine how young people’s perceptions of shared values with their peers underpin feelings of environmental hope and action.
You will work with Dr Lukas Wolf, Professor Gregory Maio, Professor Lorraine Whitmarsh, and Dr Elizabeth Marks on this project.
The project is based on robust evidence that people tend to agree on the importance of values such as freedom, helpfulness, or creativity. However, despite these substantial value similarities, we often assume that other people’s values are fundamentally different from ours. In other words, people tend to strongly underestimate how much their values are shared by other people. Using methods from experimental social psychology, this project will examine how young people’s perceptions of shared values with peers relate to feelings of hope and environmental action.
The Research Associate will be primarily responsible for the recruitment and data collection at several universities and online platforms, and they will coordinate with the external partner to facilitate data collection in schools. Data collection will require sustained oversight over a multi-wave, multi-site design, and the Research Associate will need to manage participants’ exchange of ideas in real-time on an online platform.
You will further be responsible for the preparation and piloting of materials, data management, analyses, stakeholder and public engagement, academic presentations, and draft write-ups.
You will be encouraged to make an intellectual contribution to the project, reflected in co-authorship of resulting outputs. Career development needs will be addressed through allocation of time to lead independent research interests and attend university-funded workshops.
The role has an expected start of 1 March 2024 until 28 February 2026, and is offered on a full-time (36.5 hours per week) basis. About you
Hold a PhD in Psychology or related discipline (essential).
Extensive experience with quantitative research methods and analyses (essential).
Experience with research in social and environmental psychology (essential).
Experience with academic write-ups (essential), publication (desirable), and coordination of research activity with multiple partners (desirable).
Experience with using online tools (desirable; e.g., Prolific, Qualtrics, QuestionPro).
The Department of Psychology excels in research and teaching, regularly ranking in the top 5 in national league tables (e.g., The Complete University Guide). Research in the department occurs across more than six sub-disciplines in psychology, including clinical, cognitive, developmental, environmental, forensic, health, and social psychology.
