**BACKGROUND TO GLMCC**:

- Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre is a leading UK mosque situated in the heart of Birmingham serving the community since 1979. Operating from its award-winning grade II listed Victorian building, GLMCC fulfils its mission of inspiring, educating and serving through its educational college, outreach work, welfare services, youth work, international humanitarian wing, as well as its fully functional mosque which is attended by thousands every week._

**1. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE**:
Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre in partnership with Macmillan Cancer support will be providing a three-year project to support Muslims living with cancer in Birmingham.

The post holder will build a body of enthusiastic, engaged and trained male volunteer Cancer Champions who work within the Muslim community and other settings, targeting population groups with the highest cancer risks. They will utilise existing community networks and contacts to recruit, support and develop a network of voluntary community champions across their area of work.

The role of the male volunteer coordinator will be to work together with the female volunteer coordinator in order to successfully deliver the volunteering element of the project by recruiting, training, managing and supervising male cancer community champions.

**2. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ROLE**
- Recruit and support the Cancer Champions to target population groups with the highest cancer risks to enable them to reach into their own community.
- Develop links and relationships with a wide range of partners from across public, private and third sector organisations, harnessing their commitment and support in recruiting local cancer champions.
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of people to build and sustain effective and positive relationships across public, private, community and voluntary sectors, to develop relationships, and joint working in support of the project.
- Develop and deliver the volunteer Cancer Champions training programme.
- Use community development approaches to build health literacy and personal agency.
- Provide the Cancer Champions with access to resources and networking so they can share current, relevant information with their peers and experts (face to face and virtual)
- Work collaboratively with Cancer Champions to promote and support people from their community to take up cancer screening programmes, and work to understand views and perceptions of their community regarding cancer, cancer screening and prevention to promote healthier lifestyles (including connection into community activity) to appropriately signpost to local support mechanisms developed by social prescribing.
- Capture Cancer Champions feedback and to generate better understanding of our communities, and how to improve cancer prevention projects.
- Information and data collection for project monitoring and evaluation as required by Macmillan and Green Lane Masjid.
- Promote and publicise the Champions project in collaboration with partners
- Ensure additional activities and events planned by volunteers are well-resourced, effectively organised and volunteers are supported in their role
