The Wellcome Sanger Institute is recruiting for a fantastic new position to work as part of Human Cell Atlas within the Institute's web team as a **Senior Web Developer** on a **Permanent Contract**.

**About the role**:
This exciting and greatly rewarding opportunity will develop and support the website which is central to our success. You will work closely with a team of expert web developers as part of the IT department and be responsible for the building, deployment and maintenance of the website, creating new features and effectively communicating the HCA story to an international audience.

You will utilise technologies used by the web team to build websites which: work at scale; are very robust and reliable; and you will expand your knowledge of website security. You will have the opportunity to liaise closely with our IT infrastructure teams, networking experts and database administrators to give you a very well-rounded opportunity to enhance your skills in a very exciting and cutting edge IT environment. Coupled to the website work there are ample opportunities to support API and other software requirements stipulated by the HCA Executive Office.

**About you**:
You will also be part of an internationally distributed HCA staff team and excellent collaboration skills will be needed to navigate working across multiple institutions, time zones, cultures, and contexts.

Strong communication, interpersonal skills and teamwork are required as you will be working with the leading minds in genomics research to serve and promote cutting edge work and sharing information with the international genomics community.

As Human Cell Atlas endeavours is a rapidly advancing field, you will need to constantly be thinking of developing and implementing new ways to foster the exchange of ideas over the web. This will require you to be innovative and flexible, able to adapt and create solutions to new problems and ideas.

An ability to prioritise, work independently and organise own workload is also an essential requirement.

**Essential Technical skills**:

- Full-stack web development skills with knowledge of Linux (Ubuntu); WordPress and Plugins; PHP; relational databases (MySQL and/or PostgreSQL); HTML; Javascript; SASS.
- Able to translate website designs into a responsive website that works with modern browsers and internet connected devices.
- Software/design knowledge utilising development, staging, and live environments with understanding of Git version control, automated testing, correcting bugs, and Continuous Integration.
- Understanding of web accessibility and ensuring that disability requirements are catered for, such as optimising for visual impairment and colour blindness.
- Consuming data from other web services via RESTful APIs and rendering content dynamically
- Understanding of web security and vulnerability scanning.
- Integration of other coding languages into the website and writing code for bespoke functionality as required.
- Experience working with front-end frameworks, such as Angular, React, or Bootstrap.
- Familiarity with video conferencing platforms to ensure meetings/events run smoothly
- Experience of dealing with rapidly changing priorities

**Hybrid Working**:
We have adopted a hybrid working model to allow for flexibility between office and remote working. We can discuss this further with you at interview stage.

**Salary range**: £47,643 to £56,000 (dependant on skills and experience)

**Contract Type**: Permanent
