Kennel Assistant

**Purpose**:
To ensure that all dogs at the Council's kenneling facility are properly cared for and in good health, and to facilitate the transportation of dogs as required.
Additionally, to conduct initial investigations into complaints and animal-related issues reported by residents.
**Generic Accountabilities**:
- Plan, organise, and deliver own work to provide effective support to the Dog Enforcement Team.
- Utilise resources efficiently and productively, ensuring best practice.
- Contribute to the maintenance of good working relationships with key partners and service providers.
**Job Specific Accountabilities**:
- Transport dogs using the council vehicle to various locations for veterinary treatment and delivery to rehoming centres and other locations as required.
- Ensure that all kennelled dogs are properly cared for and in good health, including providing suitable food, water, bedding, exercise, veterinary care, and sleeping considerations.
- Conduct initial investigations into complaints and animal-related issues reported by residents.
- Maintain the kennel facility and equipment in a clean, sanitary, hygienic, and tidy condition at all times.
- Assist/advise veterinary personnel attending the kennels.
- Ensure compliance with safe working practices in the preparation, use, carriage, or disposal of chemical cleaning agents and infected materials.
- Maintain clear and accurate records of kennel activity.
- Assist in emergencies concerning animals, including rabid animals and other notifiable diseases.
- Work a shift pattern and outside normal hours, including evenings and weekends, with flexibility to change shifts according to service requirements.
- Responsible for the day-to-day cleanliness and routine of the kennelling facility. May include financial reconciliation and processing of transactions.
**Key Facts and Figures**:
- Working conditions: site working at council depot in all weathers.
- Approximately 80 dogs are housed in any one-month period.
**Knowledge, Skills, and Experience**:
- Experience of enforcement work, issuing fines, and providing advice when necessary.
- Experience of working in a kennel environment.
- Experience in handling aggressive and dangerous dogs and associated risks.
- Ability to work in a kennel environment that is extensive, physically arduous, and undertaken outside in all weathers.
- Indicative qualifications: Animal Care Level 1, Kennel & Cattery Management, or any other relevant qualification.
**Additional Requirements**:
- Driving licence and own transport.
- Experience of working in a kennel environment in all weathers.
- Ability to work a shift pattern and outside normal hours, including evenings and weekends, with flexibility to change shifts according to service requirements.
**Job Types**: Full-time, Temporary contract
**Salary**: £12.25 per hour
