We are looking for a Research Assistant/Associate in Artificial Intelligence for Virtual Power Plants. This Research Associate position will contribute to the EPSRC-funded ‘Virtual Power Plant with Artificial intelligence for Resilience and Decarbonisation’ (VPP-WARD) research project within the Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh.

**The Opportunity**:
This exciting new research project in collaboration with the universities of Durham, Birmingham and Northumbria is aiming at combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) with smart grids and virtual power plants, with a scope to improve decision-making for network operators, specifically aiming on enhancing the grid resilience to natural hazards and extreme climate events. To achieve this, we will develop innovative AI-based approaches on modelling, forecasting and managing the stochastic and spatially dispersed renewable and other Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as batteries, electric vehicles, smart loads etc. This will lead to reduced energy bills for millions of UK energy consumers, fewer power cuts during extreme events, as well as greater adoption and more efficient management of DERs, enabling a rapid progress towards Net-Zero.

In collaboration with the project partners, the researchers working on this project will implement novel, physics-informed AI solutions for virtual power plants within a broader smart grid framework to develop decarbonised, weather-resilient electricity supply networks.

**Your skills and attributes for success**:

- Undergraduate and doctorate-level training in electrical/electronic engineering or a closely related field, with a strong focus on smart grids and/or artificial intelligence.
- Existing publication record in indexed, peer-reviewed journals and conferences, consummate with the level of research experience.
- Excellent work ethics, capable of working both independently and collaboratively with researchers from different disciplines or technical background.
- Excellent time keeping, time management and research communication skills to both expert and non-specialist audiences.
