British Sugar is a home-grown success story and one of the most efficient and competitive beet processers in the world. Around 3,500 farmers based in East Anglia and the East Midlands supply our four advanced manufacturing sites with eight million tonnes of sugar beet every year. We, in turn, make this in to over 1 million tonnes of sugar, serving customers across the UK, Ireland and increasingly growing commercially in the EU and world sugar markets.
Job Purpose
British Sugar operates highly automated factories processing around 8 million tonnes of UK grown Sugar Beet to produce 1.2 million tonnes of sugar. Continuous improvement and process automation is at the heart of our business. British Sugar is now starting its Smart Factory journey. To support the journey, we are recruiting a Control System Engineer for working within a central support team. The scope of the role includes ensuring control system health and compliance are in line with engineering reliability targets, end to end delivery of essential replacement control system projects and support delivery of smart factory initiatives.
Core Accountabilities
Consistently demonstrate the highest personal health and safety standards and work effectively with other team members to carry out the tasks safely and effectively.
Form part of a team of subject matter experts (SME) for all control systems maintenance tasks to enhance safety, reliability, performance, and security in line with engineering objectives. Facilitate standardisation approach and sharing of good practice and implement them.
Help build business-wide control system standards and policies and ensure that they are understood and applied appropriately at site level and to deliver compliance.
Define, Design, install, configure, and commission control system hardware and software at British Sugar sites.
Control system maintenance and management to ensure availability, reliability and optimal performance of the systems and services.
Promptly responding to and resolving control system incidents, service interruptions and technical issues reported through users or detected through monitoring systems. Perform root cause analysis and escalate complex problems to minimise downtime.
Carryout software updates, patches and manage security vulnerabilities to mitigate risks and maintain the security posture of the control system.
Design, define, implement, and standardise system integration with third party systems and different control systems ensuring secure connectivity and access control.
Monitor and manage execution of control system backups and verification of backups.
End to end project management of essential replacement projects for management of control system obsolescence and life cycle management.
Manage changes through established change management process and ensure audit trail of control system changes.
Skills, Knowledge & Competencies
Commitment to maintaining the Health & Safety for self and others.
Understanding of hazards and controls associated with a complex industrial environment and producing food and feed.
Comprehensive technical knowledge gained through large scale, complex operational factory experience.
A proven track record of effective technical problem-solving, fault diagnosis and continuous improvement.
Proven track record of working with modern Distributed Control Systems or large-scale PLC/SCADA system is essential.
Detailed understanding of and experienced in Honeywell Control Systems (Experion PKS and TDC) and PLC based SIEMENS SCADA control systems is desirable.
Proven track record of working with modern Distributed Control Systems or large-scale PLC/SCADA system.
Basic understanding of networking within OT systems, its design principles, techniques, and best practices within OT systems with desire to learn more and work to achieve extensive knowledge and experience.
Basic understanding of virtualisation and server/client environment within OT systems with desire to learn more and work to achieve extensive knowledge and experience.
Understanding of industrial communication protocols, physical installation, and maintenance.
High degree of credibility and the ability to effectively communicate across all levels of the factory and the operations function of the business.
Demonstrate passion to inspire everyone to do their best, pulls people successfully through critical situation and effectively transfers knowledge to colleagues.
IOSH / NEBOSH trained, desirable but not essential.
Other requirements
Hybrid work pattern, with the expectation that the candidate will spend at least 60% of the time working on sites with the site teams.
Since the role involves cross site working, the candidate needs to have a full UK driving license
