Over 300 scientists based at the Museum tackle important global challenges, spanning mineral scarcity, food security and biodiversity loss. The Museum is globally renowned for excellence in science and research and championing digital capacity and innovation.
The Museum has been awarded a substantial government investment of £202m, to create a new science and digitisation centre at Thames Valley Science Park (TVSP) which is owned by the University of Reading. This is a once in a century opportunity to shape the future of the Museum, protect and share our unique collection and further our science.
The Programme comprises several major projects and workstreams and this role sits within the Moves Project.  
Moves Project
The new centre will include a large collections store alongside new specialist laboratories and non-technical works spaces. As part of this development, the Museum will be moving over a third of its 80 million specimens and Library and Archive collections from its four sites (in London, Hertfordshire and Yorkshire) to the new site, plus undertaking substantial internal moves. 
This includes audit, documentation, stabilisation and rehousing, curation, and packing, among other activities.
The Museum is seeking a Collections Move Team Leader for the NHM Unlocked Programme. The Team Leader will provide front line support and management of Collections Move Assistants delivering activities related to assessment, preparation, and packing of collections as part of the Unlocked Programme. This role is part of the Unlocked Moves Project Team, working predominantly with the Life Sciences vertebrate collections, and is managed by the Collection Moves Preparation Manager. As well as working directly with four other Moves Team Leaders you will work alongside other Project and Museum staff including curators, conservation, registration, digitisation and data specialists’, and the Move Project management team.
We are looking for responsible, results-driven individuals who are able to combine a practical and theoretical understanding of natural history collections with a project-based approach and excellent communication skills. You will lead on the day-to-day delivery of this ambitious programme, including the development and supervision of collection preparation activities, monitoring and reporting progress of work plans, and resolving or escalating issues.
Some travel may be required to the new site at Reading from 2027.
The ideal candidate will be a confident and results driven individual, who is excited to safeguard to the Museum’s unique and diverse collections through an ambitious moves programme. A strong understanding of collection management policies, procedures, documentation, and their practical implementation physically and digitally is key.
We are looking for someone who embraces solving complex problems and is able to think creatively to develop innovative new processes and workflows for collection preparation. The successful candidate will be someone who is highly organised with excellent time management skills and is able to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines within a complex environment.
To thrive in this role, you will be adept at building positive relationships across all levels of the organisation and have strong interpersonal skills. We are looking for someone with demonstrable experience of successfully leading individuals or managing teams to deliver within a project-based environment.
An enthusiasm for the Natural History Museum and the natural world, as well as acting as an ambassador and champion for our brand, reputation and values are essential.
