Are you an experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist looking to take that next step into a band 7 post looking for a new challenge whilst continuing to develop your clinical practice and leadership skills.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Stroke therapy team at Heartlands Hospital on the acute stroke unit. The Stroke Unit is based on a brand new ward with a bed base of 24 stroke patients. You will need specialist clinical skills, a flexible approach including excellent team working, organisational and time management skills. Evidence of prior leadership would be beneficial to support the role. The post holder will have a diverse caseload of complex stroke patients and be instrumental in the development of the stroke therapy workforce and pathway.We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated, innovative Occupational Therapist who would be able to support the development of the stroke pathway.

Training & Support will be provided by experienced therapists already working in the team with the focus on maximising the potential of the successful candidate.

You will join our dynamic team of therapists who strive towards holistic recovery and regaining independence following admission, we are committed to continued professional and career development of all staff.

Main duties of the job

To take a lead role within the stroke in patient team, providing advanced Physiotherapy assessment and treatment of stroke patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions. To use specialist skills to effectively manage caseload, work priorities including service delivery, patient and professional demands.

* To be a source of expertise, to identify, analyse, evaluate and problem solve to enable the development and delivery of individualized intervention and treatment programmes in a variety of settings.

* To provide a consultative role with relatives and staff providing advice, recommendations

support, training and instruction as identified.

* To provide leadership and management on a daily basis to the therapy team

* To supervise, educate and assess the performance of students as required.

* To deliver training to multi-disciplinary team members ensuring competence in performing duties within their agreed scope of practice.

* To collaborate with the stroke therapy workforce across the pathway.

* To undertake Evidence Based audit and research projects to further own and team's clinical practice, making recommendations for changes.

* To objectively aim to improve the SSNAP data working in partnership with the CTL and stroke leads.

* To work in close collaboration with carers and ESD teams as applicable to patients need.

Qualifications

Essential


  • * Current registration with Health and Care Professions Council , OT register.
  • * Occupational Therapy degree qualification or equivalent, and significant NHS post graduate experience
  • * Documented evidence of Continued
  • * Professional Development of relevant specialist knowledge and skills
  • * Good standard of general education including GCSE maths and English grade C and above.

Desirable


  • * Evidence of leadership training.
  • * Membership of a professional special interest group or national/regional network (RCOT specialist section neurological practice
  • * Recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality.

Experience

Essential


  • * Understanding of organisational structure of the NHS and Social Care.
  • * An demonstrated ability to provide OT professional/clinical leadership
  • * Significant experience of working in an acute hospital setting with neurological and stroke experience.
  • * Experience of working within an acute OT team and participating in service development.
  • * Experience of supporting and supervision of junior therapists, student occupational therapists and assistants.
  • * A specialist knowledge across a range of occupational therapy practices, routine and non-routine, requiring relevant specialist knowledge in the field of stroke and neurology.
  • * Understanding of current legislation and application to Occupational Therapy and setting.

Desirable


  • * To be able to support and create clinical pathways to improve and develop specialist services.
  • * To have an awareness of creating Business cases to improve team outcomes and recruitment
  • * Open mindfulness of new ways of working and supporting recruitment

Additional Criteria

Essential


  • * Highly developed physical skills including dexterity, co-ordination & sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
  • * Excellent written and verbal communication skills including an ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive and contentious information.
  • * An ability to not only prioritise and organise own workload, but support junior members of staff with caseload management. Offering coaching and implementation of strategies to support performance.
  • * An ability to cope with a range of complex options, finds solutions, analyse, compare and decide on appropriate course of action.
  • * An ability to lead and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • * IT skills -- computer literate in email, Word & PowerPoint
  • * Demonstrate enthusiasm and an interest in developing expertise within Stroke & neurology
  • * Demonstrate a professional attitude.
  • * An ability to cope with moving/manoeuvring patients/equipment on a daily basis.
  • * An ability to frequently concentrate on patient assessments and treatments.
  • * An ability to cope with occasional exposure to distressing/emotional situations.
  • * Able to contribute to weekend rota ( 1 in 5 weekends
  • * Driving licence and car owner

Desirable


  • * Awareness and knowledge of traumatic brain injury and other neurological conditions other than stroke in order to assess, treat, analyse patient's performance. Identifying correct discharge pathways.
  • * To share clinical knowledge and support junior members of staff with complex discharges for patients with neurological deficits.
